BRETT MOSES FROM HULL CAUGHT IN CANADA MEETING 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN GRAND FORKS
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming, Brett Moses, a 37-year-old man from Hull, traveled across international borders with the intent to meet a young girl he had been communicating with over the internet.The incident unfolded in May 2010, when Moses flew from the UK to Canada, specifically to Vancouver, before embarking on an arduous 11-hour bus journey to the town of Grand Forks.
His journey was ultimately halted by Canadian authorities after concerns were raised by the parents of one of the girl’s friends.
The parents had become suspicious and contacted the police, leading to an investigation that uncovered Moses’s plans.
It was revealed that Moses, who worked as a security guard in Hull, had been engaged in online conversations with the girl, who was only 13 years old, for an extended period.
According to court proceedings, Moses first initiated contact with the girl in 2004 through an internet chat room.
During these exchanges, he falsely claimed to be a 13-year-old boy named John Smith.
Interestingly, he initially communicated with the girl’s father, who was unaware of the true nature of the online interactions.
It was the father who later introduced Moses to his daughter after hearing claims that the girl was being physically abused and beaten by her foster father.
This connection set the stage for a series of increasingly inappropriate communications.
Over the course of seven or eight months, Moses maintained contact with the girl and her friends, further entrenching himself in their online lives.
The grooming process escalated as he built a false sense of trust and familiarity.
In June 2005, Moses made the decision to travel to Canada, ostensibly to meet the girl in person.
Upon arriving in Grand Forks, he attempted to contact her by phone but was met with silence.
Not discouraged, he then reached out to one of her friends, whose parents became suspicious of his intentions.
The parents of the girl’s friend confronted Moses, asking for identification.
During this encounter, Moses claimed to have lost his ID and provided a false identity, stating he was Brian Patterson.
He also claimed that John Smith, the alias he used online, was his foster son who had been too ill to travel.
His deception was eventually uncovered, leading to his detention by Canadian police.
Moses was subsequently deported back to the United Kingdom, where he was met by British authorities and taken into custody.
At Hull Crown Court, Moses pleaded guilty to charges of sexual grooming.
He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offense within that period.
The case underscores the serious risks posed by online predators and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable minors from exploitation and harm.
