DUNDEE ROOFER GETS CONVICTED OF FIVE YEARS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE
The victim of a five-year campaign of domestic abuse in Dundee expressed her outrage following a disturbing comment made during her offender’s sentencing at Dundee Sheriff Court. The offender, roofer Blayne Cavanagh, subjected his ex-partner to constant harassment, including insults, physical assaults, and damaging her belongings.
He poured cheese sauce over her designer trainers, shredded her clothes, and stabbed her handbags.
The court was told that Cavanagh, of Findowrie Street, had been in a relationship with the woman for eight years during which he belittled her, insulted her weight, and made derogatory remarks about her mental health.
On June 23, 2020, he went on a violent rampage, throwing her clothes out of drawers, dismantling a cabinet, and knocking a television down stairs.
In 2022, he sent her abusive messages, including threats of violence and harm.
He also sent a picture of her trainers covered in sauce and a video showing him cutting off the toes of her shoes, further humiliating and intimidating her.
During sentencing, Sheriff Gregor Murray acknowledged the appalling behavior but controversially stated the woman ‘gave as good as she got,’ despite the prosecutor emphasizing the severity of Cavanagh’s actions.
Cavanagh was fined and ordered to perform 140 hours of unpaid work, along with a two-year non-harassment order.
The victim, who asked to remain anonymous, is devastated, describing how her mental health has suffered and how her childhood home was wrecked during the abuse.
She expressed her shock and dissatisfaction with the court’s decision and plans to lodge a formal complaint, stating: “I’m appalled and will be looking to make a complaint.” She now has security measures in place for her safety and continues to seek mental health support.
