BARRY SMITH FROM DUNDEE SENTENCED FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE AND THREATS
A man identified as Barry Smith from Dundee has been sentenced after a series of disturbing incidents involving domestic abuse and threatening behavior.The court heard that Smith, aged 47, engaged in a pattern of aggressive and intimidating conduct towards his former partner, which culminated in a violent confrontation at their shared residence in Dundee.
Between April 1, 2022, and November 18, 2024, Smith was involved in a series of troubling incidents.
During one such episode, he forcibly covered the woman’s mouth and issued threats of violence, actions that caused significant fear and distress.
The court was informed that Smith had previously pleaded guilty to charges including aggressive behavior, shouting, swearing, making offensive remarks, and issuing violent threats.
Further details revealed that Smith made an offensive and threatening phone call to his former partner, during which he seized her phone and physically injured her after covering her mouth with his hand.
These actions demonstrated a pattern of controlling and abusive behavior, which the court described as a classic attempt to dominate his partner.
At the hearing in Dundee Sheriff Court, the victim expressed her desire for a non-harassment order to be in place for as long as possible, seeking protection from further contact or abuse.
A social work report was prepared ahead of the sentencing, providing the court with additional context about the case.
During the proceedings, Sheriff Gregor Murray was informed that Smith and his now-ex-partner had continued to stay at the same address in Dundee despite their separation, a situation that appeared to exacerbate the ongoing issues.
The sheriff commented on Smith’s behavior, stating, “Your behaviour you exhibited to your wife was what psychologists describe as classic attempts to control someone.
It’s appalling.” While acknowledging that Smith expressed remorse for his actions, Sheriff Murray emphasized the seriousness of the conduct, noting how terrifying it must have been for the victim.
As part of the sentence, Smith was ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work instead of serving time in custody.
Additionally, he was placed under a non-harassment order that will remain in effect for five years, aiming to prevent any further contact or abuse.
