ANDREW O’NEILL CONVICTED IN DUNDEE FOR ONLINE SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In August 2018, a disturbing case emerged from Dundee involving Andrew O’Neill, a 21-year-old man who engaged in a calculated scheme to exploit a vulnerable teenage girl through online deception.O’Neill, operating under the false identity of a modelling agent, targeted a 15-year-old girl with high-functioning autism, luring her into sending explicit photographs.
The predator’s manipulative tactics included creating a fake Facebook profile under the pseudonym “Jennifer Watts,” which featured a profile picture of a young woman with brown hair in her early twenties and a cover photo claiming she was a modelling agent.
O’Neill’s contact with the girl began with seemingly innocent compliments on her appearance and an assertion of her potential as a model.
Over time, he persuaded her to send increasingly revealing images, initially clothed and later fully nude, by claiming that such flexibility was essential for modelling work.
He asked her to perform specific actions, such as touching her toes and taking photos from different angles, further grooming her into compliance.
As the communication progressed, the girl became uncomfortable but was persuaded to send explicit images.
However, when she refused to send more photographs after a week, O’Neill’s behavior took a sinister turn.
He sent a topless image of her to two of her friends, which heightened her suspicion and alarm.
Subsequently, he threatened to distribute the images to her family and other friends if she did not comply with his demands for additional indecent photos.
The situation escalated when the girl’s mother became involved, noticing suspicious activity and contacting the police.
Authorities responded swiftly by raiding O’Neill’s residence in the Baxter Park area of Dundee.
During the search, they uncovered evidence of his online scam, including a significant collection of child abuse images stored on his laptop, tablet, and mobile phone.
Among the illicit material was a particularly disturbing image depicting a child being raped.
O’Neill was charged and subsequently admitted to attempting extortion and possessing indecent images of children.
His court appearance at Dundee Sheriff Court was marked by a guilty plea to these serious charges.
The court was informed that the images found on his devices included some that could be described as “images of an atrocity,” highlighting the severity of his offenses.
Prosecutor Nicola Gillespie provided details of the case, explaining that O’Neill had contacted the girl via Facebook between July 1, 2016, and September 14, 2016, and had continued his illicit activities until July 31, 2017.
The victim, who was described as remembering events clearly due to her high-functioning autism, was initially approached under the guise of a modelling opportunity.
O’Neill’s manipulation included compliments and requests for photos in various states of undress, culminating in explicit images that she later became suspicious of.
Further distress was caused when O’Neill’s reach extended to her friends, with messages sent to them containing topless images of the girl.
The girl’s mother, upon discovering these messages, promptly contacted law enforcement authorities.
The police investigation confirmed the extent of O’Neill’s criminal conduct, leading to his arrest and subsequent guilty plea.
During sentencing, Sheriff Alastair Brown emphasized the gravity of the offenses, noting that O’Neill’s deliberate deception exploited a vulnerable child and involved the creation and distribution of highly disturbing images.
The sheriff highlighted the potential for severe emotional trauma and even tragic outcomes such as suicide among victims of such abuse.
O’Neill was sentenced to four years in prison, placed on the sex offenders register for life, and the court deferred sentencing for further social work and psychological assessments.
He was remanded in custody pending these evaluations, underscoring the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
