ANDREW MITCHELL FROM DUNDEE SENTENCED AFTER VIOLENT OUTBURST AND POLICE SPIT INCIDENT
A man identified as Andrew Mitchell from Dundee was sentenced to prison following a series of violent and disrespectful acts that occurred during a night of alcohol-fueled chaos.The incident, which took place on Dundee’s Balbeggie Street, culminated in Mitchell assaulting his partner and later spitting in the face of a police officer, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
According to court proceedings at Dundee Sheriff Court, Mitchell, aged 28, displayed a volatile and aggressive demeanor after his partner received a phone call from her ex-boyfriend.
Witnesses described how, shortly after she hung up, Mitchell’s mood shifted dramatically, turning from calm to hostile.
Prosecutor Marie Irvine explained that around 4:45 a.m., Mitchell physically assaulted his partner, striking her with enough force to cause her to fall and lose consciousness.
Witnesses attempted to intervene, but Mitchell responded with threats, stating, “I’ll take all three of you,” indicating his aggressive intent.
During the altercation, Mitchell also damaged property by punching a mirror, which shattered and resulted in a cut on his hand, blood spilling across the flat.
His violent behavior persisted as he continued to assault his partner before the witnesses decided to leave the scene for their safety.
The situation escalated further when Mitchell punched the woman again, prompting the witnesses to return and check on her condition.
Police were called to the scene, where officers found the woman in a highly distressed state.
Mitchell was detained and taken into custody.
During the arrest at the police station on West Bell Street, Mitchell was observed to be slurring his speech and smelled strongly of alcohol.
In a shocking display of disrespect, as police officer PC Tony Weed opened the police van door, Mitchell spat directly into his face.
Mitchell then apologized, saying, “Sorry I spat I didn’t mean it.” Mitchell later pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including assaulting his partner, causing her to lose consciousness, and behaving abusively.
He also admitted to spitting on PC Weed during the arrest.
The court heard that Mitchell’s behavior was influenced by substance misuse, which was linked to the traumatic loss of his parents during his teenage years.
Defense solicitor Mike Short highlighted that alcohol use was a way for Mitchell to cope with his grief, describing his client as having a “Jekyll and Hyde” personality when intoxicated.
Sheriff Alastair Carmichael condemned Mitchell’s actions, emphasizing the severity of his conduct.
He stated, “You committed this assault on your partner before going on to assault a police officer by spitting in his face.
Spitting on a police officer in the execution of his duty is unacceptable, particularly when it is known that coronavirus is transmitted by aerial droplets.
It’s just appalling.” Ultimately, Mitchell was sentenced to 29 months in prison, reflecting the seriousness of his violent and disrespectful behavior during the incident in Dundee.
