DUNDEE MAN BOMBARDED EX-GIRLFRIEND WITH 400 CALLS IN ABUSE SPREE
Adam Stewart, aged 30, was involved in persistent abusive behavior towards his former girlfriend. The court heard he bombarded her with more than 400 calls in an effort to persuade her to lie to the police and to save him from imprisonment.
Despite being locked up, Stewart continued to harass her with menacing calls and letters.
Dundee Sheriff Court's deputy fiscal Lisa Marshall stated, “They had been in an on-off relationship for 13 years which she ended in March 2019.
During that relationship he was convicted on five occasions for criminal behaviour against her.” The woman moved to a new flat arranged by Women’s Aid to escape Stewart, but he tracked her down and subjected her to ongoing abuse.
She reported that he appeared unannounced, emotionally blackmailed her, spat in her face or on his hand to rub in her hair and face on at least two occasions.
From the date of his remand, he repeatedly contacted her through calls and letters, totaling 417 contacts from January 24 to June 30.
She expressed her reluctance to answer but felt compelled, as Stewart instructed her to tell the police she couldn’t remember anything and threatened her with a male acquaintance from prison watching over her.
Stewart admitted to engaging in a course of abusive behavior between April 1 and August 7, 2019, including spitting on his hand and rubbing it on her head and attempted to pervert the course of justice by urging her to lie to law enforcement and contacting her while he was in custody for breaching bail conditions.
The sheriff deferred sentencing for background reports, and Stewart was remanded in custody.
