ROMANIAN RAPISTS ABEL MUNTEAN AND RAUL NOVAC SENTENCED IN FIFE FOR HORRIFIC SEX ATTACKS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Fife, two Romanian nationals, Abel Muntean and Raul Novac, were convicted and sentenced for their involvement in a brutal series of sexual assaults targeting an 18-year-old woman.The incidents took place in Kirkcaldy, a town within Fife, and have prompted discussions about deportation and justice for victims of such heinous crimes.
On New Year’s Day in 2017, Muntean, then just 17 years old, approached the young woman under false pretenses.
He claimed that the vehicle he was driving was a taxi and that he was a licensed cab driver.
Exploiting her intoxicated state, he convinced her to enter his car, after which he drove her to a residence on Nelson Street in Kirkcaldy.
It was there that Muntean subjected her to a sexual assault, an act that would later be classified as rape.
Following the initial attack, Muntean drove the woman to a nearby house where his accomplice, Raul Novac, aged 34, was waiting.
Novac then committed a further sexual assault on the woman, adding to the trauma she had already endured.
The victim was reported missing, and her case drew significant attention from law enforcement authorities.
Both Muntean and Novac denied the allegations during their trial, but the evidence presented was compelling enough to secure their convictions.
In the High Court in Edinburgh, Judge Lord Uist delivered a stern sentence, emphasizing the gravity of the crimes committed.
Muntean was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Novac received a five-year term.
The judge highlighted that Muntean’s continued denial of the offences and lack of remorse were concerning factors.
He described Muntean’s conduct as “shocking, predatory and outrageous,” noting that the young man posed a significant risk of re-offending.
Despite his age and absence of a prior criminal record, Lord Uist stressed that the severity of the crimes warranted a lengthy custodial sentence to serve as punishment, deterrence, and protection for the public.
Raul Novac, who had fled justice after the attacks, was also sentenced to five years.
His decision to become a fugitive, fleeing to Romania and later moving to Ireland, resulted in considerable public expense, including the issuance of a European Arrest Warrant.
The court made it clear that upon completion of their sentences, both men would face decisions regarding deportation, with the Home Secretary responsible for determining their future residence status.
In his remarks, Lord Uist pointed out that Novac’s flight from justice had complicated the process of delivering justice and underscored the importance of holding offenders accountable.
Both Muntean and Novac were placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, reflecting the serious nature of their crimes and the ongoing risk they pose to the community.
The case has left a lasting impact on the residents of Fife, raising questions about safety, justice, and the measures needed to prevent such crimes in the future.
