ABERDEEN'S STEVEN MILLS FACES FINE OVER CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the local community in Aberdeen, Steven Mills, a former student leader at Robert Gordon University, has been found guilty of possessing and distributing illegal images of children.Mills, who previously served as the student president and held various influential roles within the university's student union since 2013, appeared in Aberdeen Sheriff Court last week to face charges related to child sexual abuse images.
His involvement in university activities was notable; in April, Mills ran for the position of education and welfare president once again, emphasizing his campaign with the slogan “bring back the welfairy,” a nickname he had used during his previous tenure.
His campaign manifesto was crafted with an acrostic of the word “represent,” outlining his commitments to “protect,” “support,” and ensure “transparency” in student welfare.
Throughout his time at the university, Mills was recognized for his dedication to social causes, including campaigns promoting equality, LGBT+ rights, and mental health awareness.
In 2015, he was awarded Volunteer of the Year by the Nightline Association for dedicating over 1,000 hours to establishing a night-time helpline aimed at assisting distressed students.
However, his reputation has been marred by serious criminal allegations.
Last week, Mills appeared before Sheriff Jack Brown at Aberdeen Sheriff Court to answer two charges concerning the possession and distribution of indecent images of children.
These charges stem from incidents that took place between February 23, 2015, and June 28, 2017.
It was established that Mills had been in possession of such images, including pseudo-photographs, during this period.
Furthermore, between May 1 and May 24, 2017, he was accused of sharing or showing these illicit images to others, an act that compounded the severity of his charges.
In court, Sheriff Brown sentenced Mills to a fine of £100 for each of the two charges, totaling £200, which Mills is required to pay at a rate of £20 per month.
The sheriff also ordered Mills to return to court in three months for a follow-up review to assess his compliance and progress in the case.
The case has garnered significant attention in Aberdeen, highlighting the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and protect vulnerable victims from harm.
