March 2006 Jailed rapist bragged to his boss A rapist who showed his colleagues photos of himself abusing a drugged teenage girl has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years. Simon Phelan, 41, from Basingstoke, Hants, also bragged of using chloroform to knock out his 17-year-old victim. The amateur photographer told his boss that the girl did not know what had happened, Winchester Crown Court heard. He admitted two counts of rape, sexual assault and taking and distributing indecent photographs of a child. The court heard how Phelan was only caught after his superior showed the photos to the girl’s boyfriend, who then contacted police. Phelan had told the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, to sniff the drug on a towel so that she would pass out and dream, the court heard. The teenager did not know that she had been raped until she was shown the photographs. The court also heard how she had been drugged on another occasion by Phelan who had put tablets in her drink. He had obtained the drugs from his then girlfriend, who was a nurse at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey. Detectives who raided Phelan’s house found drugs, including chloroform. Initially, he told police that the girl had consented to using the drug and to having sex, but in court he admitted raping her. Jailing Phelan, Judge Guy Boney QC said he had abused the girl’s trust and ordered him to be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely. Speaking after the case, Det Con Daniel Roberts said: “We are relieved that the boyfriend of this girl came forward, otherwise we may never have known what Phelan had done. “He is now serving a considerable sentence for his vile crime. “The effect on the victim has been pretty dramatic, inevitably. She was totally violated by someone she trusted.”
