JOHN PEARCE SENTENCED IN BASINGSTOKE FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL OFFENCES

In July 2012, a disturbing case emerged from Basingstoke involving John Pearce, a 46-year-old man whose actions have left a lasting impact on a teenage girl and the community at large. Pearce, residing on Worting Road in Basingstoke, was convicted of heinous crimes including the rape of a sleeping teenage girl, assault by penetration, and the taking of indecent photographs. His conviction followed a rigorous seven-day trial held last year, during which a jury found him guilty of these serious charges. Additionally, Pearce admitted to a series of other sexual offences, compounding the severity of his criminal record.

Prosecutor Martin Booth outlined the circumstances leading to Pearce’s arrest and conviction. He explained that the incident took place during a gathering at an address in Basingstoke, where Pearce and a group of young girls were engaged in a drinking game known as ‘ring of fire’. Mr. Booth highlighted that the court considered Pearce’s behavior unusual for a man of his age, especially given the context of him drinking alongside significantly younger girls. During the course of the game, one of the girls, who was described as becoming “paralytic” due to alcohol consumption, was taken to a bedroom to sleep off her intoxication.

The court heard that the 17-year-old victim awoke to find Pearce engaging in sexual activity. She immediately asked him to stop, and he complied. However, during this distressing incident, Pearce also took indecent photographs of her and sexually assaulted her. The victim, after discussing the incident with her mother, made the decision to report the matter to the police, which ultimately led to Pearce’s arrest and subsequent trial.

Defence lawyer Dominic Cox addressed the court, acknowledging the gravity of Pearce’s actions. He stated, “He is someone who recognises that it has all gone very badly wrong for him, other people and his family in the area where he lives.” Despite this, the court was informed that Pearce has a lengthy criminal history, including previous convictions related to dishonesty and sexual offences. Pearce’s criminal record includes seven additional offences, notably engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child and sexual activity with a child.

Judge Guy Boney delivered the sentence, condemning Pearce to a total of nine years and eight months in prison. An extended license period of three years was also imposed, meaning Pearce will be under supervision after his release. Furthermore, Pearce’s name has been permanently added to the sexual offenders register, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions. This case underscores the serious consequences of such criminal behavior and highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and the justice system to protect vulnerable individuals in Basingstoke and beyond.
