SERIAL RAPIST ROBERT GOURLAY FROM ABERDEEN AND FIFE ESCAPES JUSTICE AGAIN

In a troubling case that has once again highlighted the flaws in the supervision of sex offenders, Robert Gourlay, a convicted serial rapist from Ceres, Fife, managed to evade police detection after his release from prison, only to commit further heinous acts.

Gourlay, 33 years old at the time, initially claimed to authorities that he was residing at his mother’s home in Ceres, Fife, following his release.

However, he subsequently fled to the south of England, and it was only after he committed another rape that his disappearance was uncovered, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of monitoring systems in place for sex offenders.

Gourlay’s criminal history is extensive and disturbing.

He was originally sentenced to nine years in prison after being convicted of three separate rapes in Aberdeen in 1991.

Among his victims was a 15-year-old girl, and his methods were particularly violent; he had partially strangled some of his victims.

One of these victims, unable to cope with the trauma, tragically drank herself to death.

After serving his sentence, Gourlay moved to Dorset, where he was required by law to register as a sex offender.

Yet, he failed to do so, neglecting his legal obligation to inform local police of his whereabouts.

His failure to register and subsequent flight from authorities sparked widespread concern.

Conservative justice spokesman Phil Gallie acknowledged the difficulties faced by police in tracking sex offenders but emphasized the importance of learning lessons from cases like Gourlay’s.

Gallie stated, “I am horrified that this could have arisen and we have to look at where the gaps are to see that it never happens again.” Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Edinburgh Rape Crisis expressed her support for Gourlay’s life sentence but criticized the system that allowed him to move freely without police oversight.

She remarked, “There needs to be some sort of mechanism to stop people coming off the register.

What this has highlighted is that the law needs to be strengthened.” Under the Sex Offenders’ Act, failure to register with local police when moving can result in a six-month prison sentence or a fine of up to £5,000.

The purpose of the register is to enable law enforcement agencies to keep track of known offenders who may pose a future threat.

At Southampton Crown Court, Judge David Maclaren Webster described Gourlay as a “very dangerous man” and a significant threat to women.

Addressing Gourlay, whose mother resides in Ceres, Fife, the judge said, “You continue to deny those offences in 1991 as you continue to deny the latest one.

It seems to me you were and remain a very dangerous man indeed.

You present a great threat to young women.” One of Gourlay’s original victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons, shared her ongoing trauma.

She expressed relief that Gourlay was sentenced to life imprisonment but admitted that she would never forget her ordeal.

“I’m glad he’s gone away for life but I can’t forget what he did to me.

I still hate him and I just wish he had been put away before someone else had to go through what I did,” she said.

She also revealed her fear that Gourlay might return to attack her again, especially after learning he had assaulted another woman.

Another victim, who was raped twice by Gourlay and later died of alcohol poisoning in January 1992, was represented by her mother, who is now 80 years old.

She expressed her outrage, saying, “Gourlay should never have been allowed out of jail to rape again.

I hope they throw away the key for good.

He is nothing but a brute.” She described how her daughter, once bright and bubbly, could not cope with the trauma inflicted upon her, and her heart broke witnessing her suffering.

Prosecutor Michael Vere Hodge QC recounted that Gourlay had previously been sentenced to nine years at Aberdeen High Court for his earlier crimes, which included raping a 15-year-old girl while on bail for two other attacks.

The latest conviction involved the rape of a 20-year-old woman Gourlay met at a carnival in Dorset.

According to Mr.

Vere Hodge, the woman had been intoxicated at the event and later returned to Gourlay’s nearby home.

She fell asleep, only to be awoken in the middle of the night by Gourlay, who was standing at the foot of her bed in his underpants.

Despite her protests—shouting “No,” kicking, punching, and biting—Gourlay persisted, and the court heard that he deliberately set out to assault her while she was vulnerable.

Gourlay claimed that he and the woman had spent the night in the same bed but insisted he had not touched her.

The judge, however, condemned his actions, stating, “You quite calculatingly set out to rape a young woman who you knew to be worse the wear for drink.

You caused her to virtually lose consciousness, punched her, then raped her.” Following the trial, Detective Constable Andy Stuckes described Gourlay as “a very dangerous man” and warned that if he remained free, he would likely attack women again.

Under the provisions of the Crime Sentences Act of 1997, Gourlay faced a mandatory life sentence for his second conviction of a serious violent crime.

Judge Maclaren Webster ordered that Gourlay serve a minimum of six years and two months before being eligible for parole, emphasizing the ongoing danger he posed to society.
