ROBERT DOUGLAS ABERDEEN SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE AND RAPE IN SCOTLAND
In December 2014, Robert Douglas, a 57-year-old man with a disturbing history of sexual offenses, was sentenced to seven years in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh. The court heard harrowing details of his crimes, which spanned over a decade and involved multiple victims across Aberdeen and other locations in Scotland.
Douglas’s criminal activities included heinous acts of child abuse, sexual assault, and violence against women.
The judge, Mr.
Justice Edward Bowen QC, addressed Douglas directly, stating, "The fact of the matter is justice has now caught up with you," emphasizing the severity of his crimes and the need for a substantial custodial sentence.
The court’s decision was unequivocal, leaving no room for alternative punishments.
Previously, Douglas had been found guilty of assaulting a young girl aged between 12 and 13, with the intent to rape her.
The assault took place at a residence in Aberdeen between 1973 and 1975.
During the trial, it was revealed that Douglas had asked the girl for sex, and when she refused, he ignored her protests.
The court heard that he forcibly held her down and attempted to kiss her during the attack, which was characterized by violence and coercion.
In addition to this, Douglas was convicted of violently assaulting and raping a woman at various addresses in Aberdeen between 1974 and 1981.
The victim recounted how Douglas threatened her, punched her in the face, kicked her, and forcibly restrained her.
He seized her hair and threw her onto a bed, and in a particularly cruel act, forced her to sit in a bath of cold water for an extended period.
These acts of violence and intimidation underscored the brutality of his crimes.
The court also heard about Douglas’s most recent known victim, a five-year-old girl whom he molested and indecently touched in the early 1980s.
This latest offense added to the long list of his criminal behavior, highlighting a pattern of predatory conduct over many years.
During the proceedings, Douglas’s defense counsel, Neil Murray QC, acknowledged the gravity of the offenses, stating, “He is under no illusions about the gravity of the offences,” and expressed that Douglas was distressed about his situation.
The defense also referenced a background report suggesting that a community-based disposal might be appropriate, though the court considered this option unrealistic given the circumstances.
As Douglas was led away to begin his sentence, a woman seated among the public benches in the courtroom voiced her contempt, telling him, “I hope you rot in Hell.” Following his conviction, Douglas was also placed on the sex offenders register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and restrictions on his movements within the community of Aberdeen and beyond.
