REMUS COVACIU AND HIS SHOCKING RAPE CRIME IN ABERDEEN

A 28-year-old man named Remus Covaciu has been convicted and sentenced for a serious sexual offence committed in Aberdeen, Scotland, after evading justice for nearly eight years.

Covaciu was found guilty of raping an 18-year-old woman outside a nightclub in Aberdeen in January 2013, a crime that has haunted the victim and society alike for years.

The investigation into Covaciu's actions gained momentum after a European Arrest Warrant was issued in July 2020.

This warrant was part of a broader effort to bring him to justice, as he had been on the run since the time of the offence.

In April of the following year, authorities successfully extradited the Romanian national from France, where he had established a new life with his partner and their two children.

The lengthy extradition process was a key step in finally confronting Covaciu with the consequences of his alleged actions.

On the day of sentencing, the High Court in Edinburgh sentenced Covaciu to a term of three years and nine months in prison.

He had previously entered a guilty plea to the charges of rape.

However, his legal woes expanded when he failed to attend a scheduled hearing and breached his bail conditions, further complicating his case.

The court heard evidence that detailed the night of the attack.

Prosecutor John McElroy explained that the victim was attending a friend's birthday gathering before heading to the Institute nightclub located on Aberdeen’s Bridge Street.

After leaving the nightclub, CCTV footage captured her sitting on a pavement in the city, appearing disoriented and intoxicated.

It was at this point that Covaciu, who was residing in the Torry area of Aberdeen at the time, approached her.

The footage showed Covaciu engaging with the young woman before allegedly raping her.

The distressing incident was brought to police attention by a CCTV operator who recognized the victim and alerted authorities.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the young woman in a disheveled state; she was intoxicated and could not remember the attack.

Covaciu was quickly traced to a nearby shop and taken into custody that very night.

He was subsequently brought before a court, but after failing to appear at the High Court in Glasgow in November 2013, and neglecting to sign in at police stations twice while on bail, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

His whereabouts remained unknown until he was located in France, where he lived with his partner and children.

During the trial, defense lawyer Iain McSporran QC stated that Covaciu hoped to resume his family life upon release and acknowledged the need for punishment.

Despite this, the judge, Lady Drummond, emphasized the gravity of the crime, stating, "You are a first offender and were 19 when this offence occurred.

You raped a young woman while she was so intoxicated as to be incapable of refusing or giving consent." The judge also remarked on the victim’s suffering, noting, “It is apparent from her impact statement that your crime has deeply affected her.

The delay caused by your departure has only prolonged her pain.” As a result of his actions and the ongoing impact, Covaciu was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring continued monitoring and awareness of his presence within the community.

This case underscores the importance of steadfast law enforcement efforts to bring perpetrators of sexual violence to justice, regardless of the time elapsed or the difficulties involved in locating offenders.

The sentencing sends a clear message about the serious consequences of such offences, reaffirming society’s commitment to protect victims and uphold the rule of law.
