PHILLIP THORNTON FROM STOKE-ON-TRENT JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING UNDERAGE GIRL

In July 2019, Phillip Thornton, a 70-year-old resident of Stoke-on-Trent, was sentenced to prison following a disturbing case of sexual misconduct involving a young girl. The incident came to light years after it occurred, when the victim, who was under the age of 13 at the time, confided in her boyfriend about the abuse. Her boyfriend subsequently contacted the NSPCC, prompting the victim to report the matter to the police in 2017.

Thornton, who resides on Burnaby Road in the Sandyford area of Stoke-on-Trent, was accused of encouraging the young girl to perform a sexual act on him and to touch him sexually. The allegations included Thornton asking the girl to rub powder on his private parts, an act that was part of the abuse. The case was brought before Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, where Thornton faced charges of indecent assault, indecency with a child, and indecency towards a child.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Richard McConaghy, presented evidence that the victim could recall Thornton's specific requests and actions. Despite Thornton’s protests of innocence, the jury found him guilty of the charge of indecency with a child. The court heard that the abuse involved the touching of Thornton’s naked genitalia, highlighting the severity and inappropriateness of his actions given the significant age disparity.

In sentencing, Recorder Heeley QC emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating, “You fall to be sentenced for a serious offence. On one occasion you got your victim to perform a sex act on you.” The judge also noted the importance of protecting children from such exploitation and abuse.

As part of his punishment, Thornton was sentenced to four years in prison. Additionally, he was subjected to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his activities and contact to prevent further harm. Furthermore, Thornton has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for the remainder of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to safeguard the community from potential future offenses.
