STOKE-ON-TRENT MAN MATTHEW LEESSE JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF SCHOOLGIRL

In October 2014, a distressing case unfolded in Stoke-on-Trent involving Matthew Leesse, a father of three, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl. The incident, which took place at a residence in North Staffordshire, left the victim deeply traumatized and suffering from nightmares, often waking up screaming during the night. The girl’s mother became alarmed after she reported the assault, prompting police investigation into the matter.

Matthew Leesse, aged 34 and known to have no fixed address, faced charges of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. He initially denied the allegations, but after a trial at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, he was found guilty last month. The court sentenced him to six months in prison and ordered him to be registered on the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years. Additionally, Leesse was prohibited from engaging in any activities involving children or young adults.

During the court proceedings, it was acknowledged that Leesse, who is a resident of Stoke-on-Trent, might have had accidental contact with the victim at the family home. His legal representative, Joanne Wallbanks, emphasized that Leesse is a family man who has had to leave his home since his conviction. She highlighted that his relationship with his wife remains strong and that efforts were made to advocate for his continued freedom.

Ms. Wallbanks stated, “The help that is needed for him can be provided in the community. He is willing to take whatever help is offered. He has suffered indirectly as a result of this conviction. Not only he, but his family.” She also expressed confidence that Leesse is unlikely to reoffend, asserting, “He is not likely to trouble the court again.”

Judge Paul Glenn addressed the court, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense. He remarked, “The offence was so serious that the defendant had to be jailed. I do not know what came over you when you behaved as the jury unanimously found you did. It was short-lived. It may have been spontaneous. You had not behaved in that way before, and you have not done so since.”

The judge acknowledged that the assault involved no physical injury, as the touching was over clothing. However, he pointed out the profound emotional impact on the young girl, stating, “What you did plainly upset a child. She complained to her mum, who said she was physically sick. The child’s own evidence was that she was scared. She had nightmares, she would wake up screaming in the night. For six or seven weeks, she would not sleep in her own bed. She was affected.”

Judge Glenn concluded by noting the emotional toll the court proceedings would have taken on the victim, saying, “Having to attend court to relive events will have had some effect on her.” The case underscores the importance of safeguarding children and the serious consequences faced by those who violate their trust.
