MUM WHO SUFFOCATED HER TWO-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER JAILED FOR A MINIMUM OF 16 YEARS

Cody-Anne Jackson was convicted of killing Macey Hogan after sending a message to her ex-partner that read: "Sorry, just thought you deserved one last picture and memory of her." The 20-year-old resident of Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, denied the murder charge but later changed her plea during her trial proceedings.

She received a life sentence at Stafford Crown Court.

Judge Michael Chambers QC described her actions as a "wicked and appalling act." The court was told that Jackson also attempted to take her own life, driven by feelings of anger and resentment towards Macey's father, Paul Hogan, following their breakup a week earlier.

Staffordshire Police released the distressing 999 call made by Jackson after she had smothered the young girl.

Macey's body was discovered on the floor of a bedroom on the morning of October 10 last year after police forced entry into her home.

Jackson, who was present in the same room attempting CPR, was found to have superficial injuries on her chest, neck, and wrists.

Prior to the incident, she had written a suicide note stating, "There's nothing for me or Macey." Before she changed her plea, Jackson claimed she woke up to find Macey's cold body beside her in bed, positioned between two pillows.

Judge Chambers noted Jackson’s acceptance of guilt and said, "You have had the courage to plead guilty and recognise the enormity of what you have done." He emphasised that the case was serious, noting that it is wicked and appalling for a mother to kill her own child who depends on her for protection.

The judge also pointed out that this was not a case stemming from mental illness, but rather an act of self-absorption, where Jackson appeared to have considered her own suicide and decided to kill Macey to prevent her from living without her mother.

Detective Inspector Dan Ison of Staffordshire Police commented that the killing was cold, callous, and intended as revenge against Paul Hogan after his breakup with Jackson.

He expressed sorrow over the loss of Macey’s life, calling it unforgivable, and extended sympathies to Paul Hogan and his family.

An NSPCC spokesperson remarked that Macey's innocence was robbed from her and emphasised that Jackson's actions were rightly punished by law.
