Feb 2000 Babysitter abused boy, 11 A babysitter was jailed for four years by a judge who said he “showed no sign of remorse” after he sexually abused a young boy. A court heard how Paul Lyon, 38, had gained the trust of a woman friend who allowed him to babysit for her five children – all aged under 18. But a court heard how on one occasion he indecently assaulted her 11-year-old son and performed an indecent act on himself after he lured the youngster to a bathroom. Lyon, of Meadgate Avenue, Chelmsford, admitted two charges of indecent assault and two of gross indecency at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday. David Holborn, prosecuting, said the boy had complained of Lyon’s behaviour on a previous occasion – but his mother turned a blind eye because she thought he may have been lying. But Christopher Paxton, representing Lyon, said: “These are all shameful and deplorable acts committed on a young man of 11, now aged 12. But he is remorseful about what happened and is ashamed of what he has done.” Mr Paxton added Lyon was not a paedophile and was unlikely to reoffend. He also said Lyon’s mother and sister had since disowned him. Mr Justice Haworth sentenced Lyon to four years imprisonment and told him he would have to stay on the sex offenders’ register for an indefinite period. He said: “A woman asked you to babysit for her five children but you breached her trust and that is the serious picture of this case. You remain in a state of denial about the sort of behaviour you admit you indulged in. “It’s clear you show no sign of remorse. In sentencing you I have taken into account the revulsion that members of the public feel when they hear a case of this kind.”
