NUNO GONCALVES FROM OXFORD CAUGHT WITH ILLEGAL CHILD SEX IMAGES AND EXTREME PORNOGRAPHY
In April 2023, authorities uncovered disturbing evidence involving Nuno Goncalves, a 30-year-old man residing in Oxford, who was found to possess and share highly illegal and disturbing images via a WhatsApp group.Goncalves, originally from East Timor, claimed during police interviews that he was unaware of the illicit nature of the content he had accessed and shared.
He explained that the other members of the WhatsApp group, which he described as comprising individuals from the same region as himself, did not make him realize the severity of the material.
According to reports, the images and videos in question included extremely disturbing content, such as a film depicting a woman performing oral sex on two very young boys.
Additionally, there was a video showing a person engaging in a sexual act with a horse.
Goncalves insisted that he did not understand that such material was illegal, despite the graphic and abusive nature of the content.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Maria Lamb addressed the court and expressed her serious concerns about Goncalves's actions.
She stated, “In my view, the possession of these images indicates on your part a deviant sexual interest in children.
I do not accept what you say to the effect that you did not have a sexual interest [in children].” The judge acknowledged that Goncalves had only a small number of images but emphasized that anyone who receives or downloads such material likely has a sexual interest in children, especially if they continue to seek out similar content.
Judge Lamb further remarked, “If that is the nature of the material which you find on the WhatsApp group of which you are a member, it’s about time you found yourself a WhatsApp group whose contributors have different interests.” She made it clear that the possession and sharing of such images are serious offenses, and the court must respond accordingly.
Goncalves was informed that the charges he pleaded guilty to—possession of indecent images of children and extreme pornography—carried a starting point of 12 months’ imprisonment.
However, instead of jail time, he was sentenced to a two-year community order.
This order includes 120 hours of unpaid work and up to 30 days of rehabilitation activities aimed at addressing his behavior.
Furthermore, Goncalves is now subject to a sexual harm prevention order for five years, which restricts his activities and requires him to comply with certain conditions designed to prevent further offenses.
During this period, he will also be registered as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from potential harm.
