Martin Dews

Leeds Oxford Dewsbury Sexual Abuser

Released from prison on 21 September 2012 to the Dewsbury/Leeds area of West Yorkshire December 2009 ‘Sex predator groomed me on Facebook’ A TEENAGE girl has told how a manipulative fantasist raped her in a field after grooming her over the Internet. Martin Dews was jailed for six-and a-half-years last week after a jury at Oxford Crown Court found him guilty of raping the girl. The 30-year-old attacked his victim in a field near the Kassam Stadium after meeting her on the social networking site Facebook. The girl said about her “living hell” and said Dews should have been jailed for longer, as the Government looks to start giving even five-year-old children lessons about avoiding predators on the Internet. Oxford Crown Court was told the build-up to the rape began when Dews met a 30-year-old single mother from the city on Facebook in December 2007. Just two weeks later he moved into her Greater Leys home and began trawling the estate for young women. It was then Dews met his 17-year-old victim – who cannot be named – and began sending her Facebook messages. She said: “He knew me from hanging around the area, then added me as a friend on Facebook and started trying to get with me. “He was sending me messages saying he wanted to be with me… I didn’t want him.” Dews fled Oxford after raping the teenager in May and moved in with a mother-of-seven, in Leeds, who he met while playing Facebook Poker. He was in West Yorkshire when police eventually caught up with him. Dews’ former partner, who no longer lives in the house in Greater Leys, explained how he targeted single mothers. She said Dews came to visit her just two weeks after they began chatting online and ended up staying for 18 months. He never worked and spent hours alone with his laptop computer in a cupboard that he called his office, she said. But, in June, Dews suddenly left her house, claiming he was going to visit members of his family. When she checked his Facebook account, she found more than 800 ‘friends’, who were almost exclusively women. His profile was changed to read ‘in a relationship’ with the woman from Leeds. Since his conviction a number of people have posted comments on his Facebook page, which remained live on the Internet until Friday. The Oxford woman said: “He was manipulative, but also charming. It has been a nightmare. He preys on young mums on benefits. “It’s as if he moves around from family to family. Who knows how many more there have been? “He was a fantasist and said he used to be a coastguard and made up lots of other lies.” Two days after the rape was reported to police, a caravan parked outside the woman’s house was set on fire and the word ‘Paedo’ was scrawled on a window. A week later the house was broken into and every room, including the loft, was ransacked. No-one has ever been arrested in connection with either of these incidents. During the trial, the court was told Dews was receiving incapacity benefit because he was unable to work due to a leg injury and was being treated for depression. The jury found Dews, of Crosby View, Leeds, guilty of one charge of rape and one charge of sexual assault at Oxford Crown Court last Tuesday. He was cleared of two further charges of raping an adult and a child. His name will remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life. The court was also told that Dews had 27 previous convictions for offences including car crime, violence and burglary. His young victim added: “He should have got longer than he did. It has been hell… he’s scum.”
