WILLIAM ANDREWS FROM BLACKBIRD LEYS, OXFORD, JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AT WESTGATE LIBRARY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, William Andrews, a 28-year-old resident of Blackbird Leys in Oxford, has been sentenced to prison after a series of heinous crimes involving the possession and distribution of indecent images of children. The incident came to light in March of the previous year when Andrews inadvertently left behind a USB stick containing illicit material at Westgate Library in Oxford.According to court proceedings, Jane Malcolm, the prosecutor, explained that police officers, while conducting routine checks at the library, received a call from Andrews himself. During the call, Andrews admitted to having left his memory device at the library premises. When law enforcement officials arrived at Westgate Library to retrieve the device, Andrews was promptly arrested on the spot.
Following his arrest, authorities conducted a thorough search of Andrews' residence located on Willow Way in Blackbird Leys. The search uncovered a significant collection of illegal images stored on his computer and DVDs, amounting to thousands of photographs depicting children in explicit and abusive scenarios. These findings underscored the severity of Andrews' criminal activities and his extensive involvement in the possession of child exploitation material.
Andrews was charged with multiple offenses, including five counts of making indecent images of children and possession of a knuckleduster. His criminal record was already marked by a lifetime registration on the Sex Offenders Register, a consequence of a previous conviction for indecent assault on a woman, which resulted in a three-year prison sentence.
During the court hearing, Andrews' defense attorney, Lucy Corrin, attempted to mitigate his actions by suggesting that he suffers from compulsive tendencies. She stated, “He has a compulsive need to collect. He would spend 18 hours a day on the Internet with very little outside social interaction.”
However, Recorder Harold Persaud delivered a stern judgment, emphasizing the potential danger posed by Andrews' actions. He remarked, “It is purely by luck it (the USB) wasn’t accessed by someone who is vulnerable,” highlighting the risk that such material could have fallen into the wrong hands and caused further harm. Ultimately, Andrews was sentenced to 12 months in prison for his crimes, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses and the ongoing threat posed by individuals involved in child exploitation.
