MICHAEL NEILSON'S BRUTAL ABUSE IN PAISLEY AND JOHNSTONE SHOCKS COMMUNITY

In August 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Michael Neilson, a 66-year-old man from Neilston Road, who was found guilty of a series of heinous crimes committed against a vulnerable toddler.

The incident, which spanned over a year and a half, revealed a pattern of severe physical and verbal abuse that left the community in shock and outrage.

Neilson's treatment of the young boy was so egregious that the child attempted to barricade himself by stacking toys against a door in a desperate effort to prevent Neilson from leaving him alone.

This act of resistance underscored the child's fear and the severity of the abuse he endured during their interactions.

The court proceedings detailed the extent of Neilson's misconduct, which took place between November 2016 and February 2018.

During this period, the accused subjected the child to repeated acts of violence and verbal assault.

The charges included punching the boy in a supermarket in Johnstone, shouting at him aggressively at a medical clinic, and abusing social workers and council staff who tried to intervene and offer help.

At Paisley Sheriff Court, Neilson was convicted of multiple offences, including physical assaults such as punching and slapping, as well as verbal abuse involving shouting and swearing.

The court heard that witnesses, including taxi drivers, a hospital nurse, a nursery nurse, and social workers, all observed Neilson's aggressive behavior towards the young boy.

Procurator Fiscal Depute Hazel Emmerson described the abuse as “verbal and physical; punching, hitting, slapping and pulling his hair,” emphasizing that such behavior was not isolated but a recurring pattern.

One social worker, Shenaz Souter, who was assigned to work with the child through Renfrewshire Council, recounted a particularly distressing incident.

She explained that the boy had gone to great lengths to prevent her from leaving him alone with Neilson at a residence in Bridge of Weir.

Souter, 28, described how the child had piled toys against the door to block her from exiting, a clear sign of his fear and the ongoing abuse.

Neilson, who is originally from the Middle East and communicated through an Arabic interpreter during the court proceedings, chose not to give evidence.

However, his police interview was played in court, revealing his cultural justifications and dismissive attitude towards the allegations.

In the interview, Neilson claimed that he swore in Lebanese Arabic and denied slapping the child in the face, asserting that such an act would be deadly.

He also attempted to justify his behavior by referencing cultural differences, stating, “His behaviour in Israel is normal,” and claiming, “I’m a gentleman.” Following the evidence and the judge’s deliberation, Sheriff Harris convicted Neilson on six counts, including wilful ill-treatment of the child, assault at Morrison’s supermarket in Johnstone, and abusive behavior towards the child and social workers at various locations.

The judge ordered background reports to be prepared before sentencing, which was scheduled for the following month, signaling the seriousness of the case and the community’s concern over such egregious abuse.
