CRAIG DOWNIE FROM GLASGOW EXPOSED AS PREDATOR TARGETING CHURCH GIRLS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Craig Downie, a 29-year-old man from Paisley, has admitted to engaging in predatory behavior towards young girls associated with church groups.The offenses took place over a span of two years, during which Downie exploited his position within the church environment to target vulnerable minors.
According to court reports, Downie, who was involved with Mosspark Baptist Church in Glasgow during 2005 and 2006, made inappropriate and lewd remarks to one of the young girls.
The situation escalated when he forcibly kissed her, an act that has left a lasting impact on the victim.
In addition, he lured another young girl, a fellow church member, into his vehicle before subjecting her to groping, further highlighting the severity of his misconduct.
Downie’s background is also notable due to his family connections.
He is the son of Joyce Downie, a businesswoman and former deacon at Mosspark Baptist Church.
It was after Downie’s crimes came to light that he and his mother left the church community.
Subsequently, in 2009, they helped establish Crookston Baptist Church, where Downie’s inappropriate actions continued to come under scrutiny.
Following the revelations, Sheriff Lindsay Wood addressed Downie directly in court, emphasizing the gravity of his actions.
The sheriff stated, “What you did was wrong and you are required to be punished for that.” As part of his sentence, Downie was placed on the sex offenders’ register for two years and was mandated to complete 200 hours of community service.
The case also revealed that a whistleblower, believed to be minister and former referee Mike McCurry, was instrumental in exposing Downie’s misconduct.
McCurry was reportedly the individual who first alerted authorities, leading to Downie’s ban from participating in the Mosspark church band.
Community members expressed their outrage over the case, with one source commenting, “People like Downie should not be moving in church circles.” The case has raised serious concerns about safeguarding within religious communities and the importance of vigilance to protect vulnerable children from predators hiding behind positions of trust.
