MICHAEL MARTIN FROM GLASGOW JAILED FOR HISTORICAL SEXUAL ABUSE OF SCHOOLGIRLS

In a case that has spanned decades, Michael Martin, a man originally from Glasgow, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of heinous crimes committed against young girls during the 1970s.

The court proceedings revealed a disturbing history of abuse that persisted over several years, with Martin targeting vulnerable children at various locations in Glasgow and the surrounding areas.

Martin, aged 59 at the time of sentencing, faced charges related to the sexual assault of two schoolgirls, with the offenses dating back more than 40 years.

Despite his vehement denial, claiming that his victims were 'wicked' and 'evil' liars, the evidence presented in court was compelling enough to secure a conviction.

The court also ordered that Martin remain on the sex offenders register 'indefinitely,' emphasizing the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.

The sentencing took place at the High Court in Livingston, where Lady Carmichael delivered a stern judgment.

She stated, 'The jury found you guilty of lewd and libidinous conduct committed against three young girls between 1972 and 1980.

The jury also found you guilty of raping two of them.' She further explained that the conduct involving the two victims was of the most serious nature, now legally regarded as rape, and highlighted the particularly vulnerable state of the victims, especially the younger girl.

Lady Carmichael emphasized that the abuse inflicted lasting trauma, which continues to affect the victims to this day.

During the trial, a social worker who prepared a report for the court described Martin as 'exceptionally callous,' reflecting the cold and calculated nature of his offenses.

The judge acknowledged that some of the abuse occurred when Martin himself was a child, with the earliest charge dating back to when he was just 13 years old.

However, she noted that as Martin matured, his understanding of the criminality of his actions would have increased, and his culpability should be considered accordingly.

The victims, now aged 47, 55, and 42, provided emotional testimony, recounting how Martin would tell them to be quiet during the assaults, often saying 'Shh.' They revealed that they kept their suffering secret for many years, questioning whether anyone would have believed them in the 1970s.

Their accounts detailed abuse that took place at various addresses in Glasgow and at a holiday park in Gatehouse of Fleet, between October 1972 and December 1980, when Martin was responsible for their care.

It was only after four decades that the victims decided to report the crimes to the police, leading to Martin's eventual arrest and conviction.

Prosecutor Angela Gray highlighted the challenges in prosecuting such cases, noting that sexual abuse often occurs in secrecy with few witnesses.

She pointed out the striking similarities in the victims' testimonies, despite the different ages and locations involved, indicating that Martin actively sought opportunities to commit these crimes.

In his defense, Martin's legal representative, Victoria Dow QC, argued that her client continued to maintain his innocence.

She mentioned that Martin had experienced a chaotic adult life, marked by alcoholism and illness, and had no prior sexual offenses or prison sentences, although he did have a criminal record.

The court was also informed that some of the abuse occurred when Martin was a minor himself, which was taken into account during sentencing.

Judge Lady Carmichael deferred the final sentence until next month, pending further considerations, but made it clear that Martin's actions warranted a custodial sentence and strict supervision.

The case underscores the long-lasting impact of childhood abuse and the importance of justice, even after many years have passed.
