WILLIAM SNODGRASS SENTENCED IN GLASGOW FOR CHILD ABUSE IN EASTERHOUSE

In October 2002, a man named William Snodgrass was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing a young girl and subjecting her to prolonged mistreatment.

The heinous acts took place over an eight-year period, beginning when the girl was just six years old in 1972, and continued until 1980.

The abuse was carried out in a residence located in the Easterhouse area of Glasgow, where Snodgrass, then 51 years old, preyed on the young victim.

During the course of the abuse, Snodgrass forced the girl to perform indecent acts, a trauma that left lasting scars.

The victim endured not only sexual assault but also physical mistreatment, which included being made to stand naked, being struck with a dog leash, and having records thrown at her.

These disturbing incidents paint a picture of a prolonged and systematic pattern of abuse that deeply affected the young girl’s life.

When the case was brought before the High Court in Edinburgh, the presiding judge, Lord Abernethy, emphasized the gravity of the offences.

He described the crimes as “very serious offences” and noted that Snodgrass had been convicted after a thorough trial.

Snodgrass, who was unemployed at the time and residing in Easterhouse, had denied all charges, which included three counts of indecency and two counts of assault.

Despite his denial, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him.

In his sentencing remarks, Lord Abernethy acknowledged that Snodgrass had no prior criminal record, which was a factor considered in the decision.

Defense lawyer Petra Collins stated that her client remained steadfast in his denial of the allegations.

She also highlighted that alcohol was a significant issue in Snodgrass’s life at the time of the offences, describing it as “the dominant factor.” As part of his sentence, Snodgrass was ordered to register as a sex offender, a measure intended to monitor and prevent further offences.

The case underscores the serious nature of child abuse crimes and the judicial system’s commitment to holding offenders accountable, especially in cases involving prolonged and systematic abuse in the Glasgow area.
