DANIEL MCMANUS GUILTY OF SEXUAL ASSAULT IN GLASGOW - PRIESTHOLE TRAGEDY

In December 2006, a disturbing incident unfolded in Glasgow involving Daniel McManus, a 21-year-old trainee priest whose actions have shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about safeguarding and trust.

McManus, who was also volunteering as a first-aider with St Andrew's Ambulance Service, was involved in an incident where he sexually assaulted a schoolboy during a medical treatment session.

The assault occurred while the boy was receiving care for a leg injury sustained during a rugby match, a sport he was unable to continue playing due to his injury.

The court proceedings revealed that the assault took place on December 10th at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

McManus admitted to the sexual attack, which involved inappropriate touching while he was providing treatment.

The court heard that the boy was asked to remove his trousers and pants, leaving him feeling uncomfortable and vulnerable during the procedure.

It was during the application of an ice-pack and bandage to the boy’s leg that McManus engaged in the inappropriate conduct.

Prosecutor Iain Bradley detailed the incident, emphasizing that the young victim was left feeling 'strange' after being asked to disrobe, and that McManus's actions constituted a clear element of grooming.

The police investigation confirmed McManus’s admission of touching the boy inappropriately, leading to his conviction.

At the time of the offence, McManus was in training to become a priest.

His legal representative stated that he had since resigned from both his college and his position with St Andrew’s Ambulance Service, acknowledging the gravity of his misconduct.

During the sentencing, Sheriff Nigel Ross highlighted that incarceration would not address the underlying issues that led to McManus’s actions.

Instead, he imposed a two-year probation period, during which McManus is required to undergo supervision and complete 200 hours of community service.

Additionally, McManus was placed on the sex offenders’ register for two years and was banned from working with children.

The court also considered the psychological assessment of McManus, which classified him as a moderate risk of reoffending.

The judge’s decision reflects a recognition of the need for ongoing monitoring and intervention to prevent future harm.

This case has sent ripples through the Glasgow community, raising questions about safeguarding measures and the vetting processes for individuals working with vulnerable populations.

The incident underscores the importance of vigilance and strict oversight in organizations that serve children and young people.
