ABERDEEN RAPIST MARTYN DANIEL SENTENCED TO OVER NINE YEARS FOR CAMPAIGN OF VIOLENCE AND RAPE
In December 2017, a man from Aberdeen named Martyn Daniel was sentenced to more than nine years in prison following a conviction for a series of heinous crimes committed over an eight-year period. The offences included multiple counts of rape, assault, and violent behavior directed at several women in the Granite City.
Martyn Daniel, aged 35 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty after a High Court trial held in Edinburgh.
The court established that his criminal activities spanned from 2007 to 2015, during which he targeted different women, including a 15-year-old schoolgirl who was his first known victim.
The jury convicted him on a total of 11 charges, encompassing acts of assault, violence, and sexual assault.
Following the conviction, the court imposed a substantial custodial sentence, with an additional three years of supervised release to follow his time behind bars.
This combined sentence underscores the severity of his crimes and the ongoing concern for public safety.
Detective Sergeant Gordon Patullo, a representative of the Domestic Abuse Task Force, provided a detailed account of Daniel’s offending pattern.
He explained that Daniel’s abusive conduct was not limited to a single incident but was part of a prolonged campaign of violence and control against multiple partners.
The detective highlighted that Daniel’s actions included acts of rape, physical violence, and controlling behaviors aimed at isolating his victims from their friends and family.
One particularly alarming incident involved Daniel assaulting a partner by threatening her with a knife to her throat when she attempted to leave her residence.
Such acts of intimidation and violence demonstrated the dangerous and unpredictable nature of his offending.
Furthermore, Daniel’s violence was not confined to physical assaults; he also engaged in repeated punching and kicking of his victims.
Disturbingly, some of these violent episodes occurred in the presence of young children, adding a layer of trauma and concern for the well-being of the victims’ families.
The victims in this case have been commended for their bravery in coming forward and cooperating with law enforcement during the investigation.
Their courage has been instrumental in ensuring that Daniel was held accountable for his actions.
Detective Sergeant Patullo emphasized that the conviction and sentencing send a strong message that crimes of domestic abuse and sexual violence are taken very seriously by Police Scotland.
The authorities are committed to thoroughly investigating such cases and ensuring that offenders face appropriate consequences, as reflected in the lengthy sentence handed down to Martyn Daniel.
