BRISTOL WOMAN MARIE FRIENDSHIP ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH TEENAGE BOY
In Bristol, a woman named Marie Friendship, aged 38, has narrowly avoided imprisonment after her involvement in a sexual relationship with a teenage boy came to light. The incident, which spanned several months, led to serious legal proceedings at Bristol Crown Court, where her case was thoroughly examined.
Friendship, who resided in Whitchurch, Bristol, was accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a minor, a charge that she ultimately admitted to during her court appearance.
The relationship reportedly lasted from July 1, 2011, until February 12, 2012, and involved her having sexual activity with a boy who was under the age of consent.
The court was informed that Friendship had confessed to others about the affair, which was the only reason the offence was uncovered.
During the hearing, prosecutor Kenneth Bell emphasized the gravity of the offence, which involved a breach of trust given Friendship's position and her relationship with the minor.
Friendship, who was living with her partner of 18 years at the time, openly told people she was in love with the teenager, a revelation that shocked many.
In her defense, Robert Duval highlighted that Friendship's life had been significantly impacted by her actions.
He pointed out that she had no prior criminal record and expressed concern that her reputation and employment prospects, particularly her ability to work as a cleaner, had been severely damaged.
Judge Julian Lambert, presiding over the case, decided to suspend a six-month prison sentence for two years.
He also ordered Friendship to undergo supervision for the same period, complete 300 hours of unpaid community service, and observe a curfew from 8 pm to 6 am for six months.
Additionally, she was placed on the sex offenders register for seven years, reflecting the seriousness of her offence.
Earlier in August 2012, Friendship faced similar allegations, with prosecutors indicating she could face up to 14 years in prison for her actions.
She had pleaded guilty to one of eight charges related to sexual activity with the minor, with the court being told that the relationship was ongoing for several months.
The judge at that time decided to adjourn sentencing to allow for further reports, including a pre-sentence report, to be prepared.
Prosecutor Richard Posner stated that the Crown might seek a Sexual Offences Prevention Order to prevent Friendship from contacting her victim in the future.
The case drew media attention, especially as it coincided with the conviction of a married teacher, Emma Webb, for similar offences involving underage boys.
Friendship, who is active on social media and lists Harry Potter and David Beckham as her interests, is currently on bail awaiting her sentencing scheduled for September 21.
The court emphasized that the adjournment for reports did not imply any particular sentence and that her bail status was not indicative of the final outcome.
