BRISTOL FOOTBALLER LIAM ORCHARD BANNED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS AFTER STARVATION CRUELTY CASE
In a distressing case that has shocked the local community in Bristol, a well-known footballer, Liam Orchard, faced a court hearing in April 2022 after allegations of neglect and cruelty towards his pet dog, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Spot. The court proceedings revealed the heartbreaking condition of the animal, which was found to be severely malnourished and living in deplorable conditions.
According to court reports, Orchard, aged 29, was brought before Bristol Magistrates’ Court to face charges related to the neglect of his dog.
The case came to light after concerned neighbors raised alarms about Spot’s welfare, prompting the RSPCA to conduct multiple welfare checks at Orchard’s residence in Juniper Court, Eastville.
The dog was discovered in a shocking state, weighing only 10.5 kilograms—significantly underweight for a dog of its size—and covered in feces, indicating severe neglect.
The court heard that despite the initial welfare checks, Orchard’s cooperation was minimal.
Lindi Meyer, representing the RSPCA, detailed how Orchard had repeatedly obstructed the charity’s officers during subsequent visits.
He claimed to be too busy to address concerns and insisted that there was nothing wrong with Spot.
These evasive responses delayed necessary treatment and raised further concerns about the dog’s health.
In September 2021, a veterinarian examined Spot and expressed grave concern over his condition, recommending urgent blood tests.
However, Orchard canceled the appointment, further delaying critical medical intervention.
It was not until December that the RSPCA officers managed to persuade Orchard to bring Spot to the front door of his home.
Upon seeing the dog, the officers immediately recognized the severity of the situation.
Spot was rushed to a veterinary clinic where it was confirmed that the dog was emaciated, with clumps of feces on his nails, and his eyes were rolling—clear signs of extreme neglect.
Following the vet’s report, the RSPCA took custody of Spot.
The veterinarian described the dog’s coat as soiled and noted that his weight was dangerously low, highlighting the urgent need for care.
The court was shown graphic images of Spot’s emaciated frame, which moved Orchard to tears.
His mother, who was present during the sentencing, gasped in shock as the images were displayed.
During the hearing, Orchard, a former youth player at Bristol City’s academy and last known to have played for Tytherington Rocks near Thornbury, broke down emotionally.
The court was also informed that since his rescue, Spot has made a good recovery and is now doing well.
However, concerns were raised again when Orchard was observed caring for a new puppy, raising fears about potential neglect.
In sentencing, the magistrates acknowledged the seriousness of the case.
Orchard pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the dog.
The court imposed a 10-year ban on him owning or keeping any animals, a measure that also applies to his new puppy, which will be taken away.
Additionally, Orchard was sentenced to an 18-month community order, a 30-day rehabilitation order, and ordered to pay £400 in costs.
The ruling underscores the gravity of animal cruelty and the importance of accountability in such cases.
