LEE WEIR ABUSE SCANDAL IN ABERDEEN: MAN AVOIDS JAIL DESPITE SERIOUS CHARGE
In a case that has shocked the community of Aberdeen, Lee Weir, a 31-year-old man, was found guilty of sexually abusing a young girl when he was a teenager.The incident reportedly took place in 2003 or 2004, when Weir was only 13 or 14 years old.
The abuse involved a five-year-old girl, and the details of the case were brought before the High Court in Edinburgh, where the severity of the offense was acknowledged by the presiding judge.
Lord Uist described the abuse as 'serious and disgusting,' emphasizing the profound and lasting impact it had on the young victim’s life.
Despite the gravity of the crime, the court was faced with the decision of appropriate sentencing.
The judge expressed his view that a custodial sentence was not necessarily warranted in this case, and instead, he opted for a non-custodial resolution.
Weir was sentenced to a two-year community payback order, which includes 300 hours of unpaid work, a supervision order, and a requirement to participate in an offender rehabilitation program.
During the proceedings, advocate depute Jane Farquharson QC revealed that the victim did not disclose the abuse at the time it occurred.
It was only later in life that she confided in a relative about her traumatic experience.
The court also heard that Weir himself had disclosed to a woman that he had abused the girl and expressed a desire to go to the police, citing feelings of shame and embarrassment as reasons for his confession.
It was ultimately a member of the victim’s family who took the initiative to contact law enforcement authorities last year.
Following this, Weir was arrested the day after the police were notified.
The judge acknowledged that, generally, a guilty plea to such a serious offense would typically result in a prison sentence.
However, in this case, the court decided on a community-based punishment.
As part of his sentence, Weir was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of five years.
The case has raised concerns about justice and the appropriate handling of juvenile abuse cases, especially when the offender shows remorse and cooperates with authorities.
The community of Aberdeen remains attentive to the ongoing developments in this case, which highlights the importance of vigilance and support for victims of such heinous crimes.
