KYLE LAING'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN PAISLEY AND PERTH: SERIAL PREDATOR JAILED FOR NEARLY 10 YEARS
In a series of disturbing incidents spanning from Paisley to Perth, Kyle Laing, aged 19, has been convicted and sentenced for multiple serious sexual assaults and predatory behavior. The court proceedings revealed a pattern of manipulative and violent acts committed by Laing, who used social media to lure his victims and then attacked them in brutal and invasive ways.
Laing’s criminal activities came to light after he posed as a woman named Iona Gannon on Facebook, a ruse he employed to attract young women and girls.
His first known attack involved a woman he contacted through social media, claiming he wanted to purchase clothes she was selling online.
The incident escalated when, after giving him a lift, Laing grabbed her by the throat and attempted to kiss her, an assault that shocked the court and the victim alike.
Further offenses followed, including an assault on a woman on April 28, where he groped her and tried to put his hands inside her clothing.
The violence culminated in a brutal attack where Laing appeared at a woman’s residence, claiming that “Iona” was running late, only to then physically assault her by tripping her, grabbing her, and attacking her with excessive force.
Adding to the gravity of his crimes, Laing had been released on bail by Paisley Sheriff Court after being charged with a sexual assault involving a woman in a car.
Despite the conditions of his bail, which included a curfew and restrictions on leaving his house unless accompanied by an adult over 25 or a social worker, Laing blatantly ignored these rules.
On February 19, he went out to meet a 15-year-old girl at Perth’s North Inch park, setting up the meeting online under his fake persona.
When Laing arrived at the designated location, he falsely claimed that “Iona” was running late.
The victim, expecting to meet the person she believed was a woman selling clothes, was instead confronted by Laing himself.
The court heard how Laing first grabbed her, tripped her to the ground, and then pinned her down.
He placed his hand over her mouth to silence her and proceeded to handle her inappropriately over her clothing, before violently punching her in the head.
The victim bravely recounted her ordeal, describing how Laing seized her arms, tripped her, and then assaulted her physically and sexually.
Despite denying the charges of sexual assault in relation to the Perth incident, Laing was found guilty by a majority jury verdict of attacking the 15-year-old girl in June of the previous year and of assaulting the woman in February.
In sentencing, Sheriff Alastair Brown emphasized the severity of Laing’s actions, especially considering his use of the internet to set up the victim for a serious sexual assault.
Laing was handed an extended sentence of nine years and nine months, comprising four years and nine months in a young offenders institution, followed by five years on license in the community.
The court also ordered Laing to be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely and imposed a sexual offences prevention order that restricts his internet use and contact with women and children for the next 15 years.
Prosecutor Vicki Bell requested the order to mitigate the risk of further offending, citing Laing’s previous conviction in Paisley and the nature of his crimes.
Laing’s actions have left a trail of trauma and fear among his victims, and the court’s decision reflects the seriousness with which such predatory behavior is treated under the law.
