JOSEPH FAULKNER AND THE HORRIFIC RAPE IN OXFORD
A man named Joseph Faulkner has been given an extensive prison sentence after being convicted of serious sexual offenses that took place in Oxford.Faulkner, aged 40 and residing at Park Close, North Leigh, was found guilty of raping a woman he had met during a night out in the area.
The incident occurred after a social gathering at the Woodman pub in North Leigh in 2019, which led to a disturbing series of events that ultimately resulted in his conviction.
During the trial at Oxford Crown Court, Faulkner claimed that any sexual activity involving his victim was consensual.
He argued that the reason they did not engage in sex was due to his intoxication, which, he alleged, impaired his biological ability to perform.
Despite his assertions, the jury rejected his defense in May, determining that he was guilty of rape along with two additional counts of sexual assault.
The court’s decision underscored the gravity of the offense and the impact on the victim.
In a poignant impact statement read aloud by prosecutor Matthew Walsh during the sentencing hearing on Thursday, July 27, the victim expressed her hope that the case would serve as a deterrent, preventing Faulkner from perpetrating similar offenses in the future.
She conveyed her desire to move forward in her life, emphasizing the profound emotional and psychological toll the assault had taken on her.
Justice Maria Lamb sentenced Faulkner to serve a total of eight-and-a-half years behind bars.
The judge clarified that Faulkner would be required to serve two-thirds of his sentence before being considered for release, highlighting the seriousness of his crimes.
She addressed the court with a firm tone, stating, “That night I am satisfied your victim had made it plain to you on more than one occasion that she had no sexual interest in you whatsoever.” Judge Lamb explained that Faulkner took advantage of the victim’s vulnerable state, noting that she was either asleep or under the influence of alcohol at the time.
She also pointed out the victim’s personal circumstances, which made her particularly vulnerable under legal definitions.
The assault inflicted significant harm, with the judge noting the lasting repercussions that included the victim being on anti-depressant medication, experiencing complications with her then-boyfriend, and having her enjoyment of pregnancy spoiled, as detailed in the court proceedings.
Witnesses had previously testified that the victim was attempting to deter Faulkner by pretending to sleep and even snoring in an attempt to prevent any sexual advances.
The court heard these details as part of the evidence presented during the trial.
In mitigation, Rónán McCann, Faulkner’s defense lawyer, expressed remorse and informed the court that the defendant and his family had attempted to communicate with the judge through letters.
McCann highlighted the emotional strain faced by Faulkner, particularly concerning his mother’s health.
Despite these mitigating factors, the judge emphasized the gravity of Faulkner’s actions.
As a consequence of his conviction, Joseph Faulkner will remain on the sex offender register for the rest of his life, a testament to the severity with which the justice system views his crimes in Oxford.
