ABERDEEN MAN CONVICTED OF BRUTAL DOMESTIC ABUSE CAMPAIGN
A man has been convicted of a brutal and disturbing campaign of domestic abuse, which involved acts of violence and vandalism against his partner. The offender, John Strathdee, was on trial at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, facing allegations of engaging in a course of conduct that was abusive towards a woman between July 18 and December 31 of the previous year.
Strathdee denied the charges, but after a trial, a jury consisting of members from the community convicted him by majority verdict in approximately three hours.
The charges detailed a range of abusive behaviors, including grabbing and squeezing the woman's neck, throwing boiling water on her to cause injuries and permanent disfigurement, shouting and swearing at her, throwing contents of a cup, violently struggling with her over her mobile phone, removing her communication devices, damaging her phones and telephone lines, pushing dog excrement through her letterbox, tampering with her vehicle, and making repeated derogatory remarks towards her.
During the proceedings, it was disclosed that Strathdee had a previous conviction related to similar conduct.
The victim's impact statement was also presented, indicating her support for a non-harassment order to be imposed on him.
The defense stated that Strathdee has been in custody since January 7 and had already served the equivalent of a 14-month sentence.
The sentencing was deferred by Sheriff Christine McCrossan, who requested reports and decided to remand him while awaiting those reports.
He was a prisoner at HMP Grampian at the time of the report.
The court acknowledged the severity of his actions and the ongoing risks posed by his behavior, leading to the decision to delay sentencing until further assessments are completed.
