JOHN BUCKTON FROM SOUTHEND SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE DOWNLOADS AT LOCAL LIBRARY

In April 2014, a disturbing case emerged involving John Buxton, a 33-year-old resident of Southend, who was found to have engaged in the illegal downloading of child abuse images using a public library computer. The investigation revealed that Buxton had accessed and downloaded over 1,000 indecent images and videos depicting children as young as seven years old, highlighting the severity of his actions and the profound harm caused by such offenses.

Buxton, residing on Hartington Road in Southend, was brought before Basildon Crown Court to face charges related to his possession and creation of indecent images of children. During the court proceedings, he was handed a three-year community order, a sentence that emphasizes rehabilitation and monitoring rather than immediate incarceration. Judge Owen Davies QC addressed the court, emphasizing the grave nature of such crimes, stating, “It’s difficult to convey just how much harm people like you do by creating a market for child pornography. Little girls should be cherished and a source of delight, but as far as you were concerned, they were a source of sexual gratification.”

Prosecutor Carolyn Gardiner provided details of how Buxton’s illicit activities came to light. She explained that Buxton was identified after a friend noticed child pornography on his computer screen, which led to police intervention. Authorities promptly visited Buxton’s residence, where they seized his computer and several CDs. An examination of these devices uncovered a staggering 3,350 images of child abuse, along with numerous searches for explicit terms and images of young girls, some of which were conducted when the computer was previously connected to the internet.

During police interviews, Buxton admitted that his life had spiraled out of control. He revealed that he intentionally left the images on his computer screen, claiming he did so in an attempt to have his friend report him to the authorities. Gardiner recounted that Buxton explained he had used a public library computer to alter security settings, download the images onto a memory stick, and then transferred them to his home computer, which lacked an internet connection at the time. On another occasion, he used a library computer to download movies, further illustrating his attempts to conceal his activities.

In mitigation, defense lawyer Matthew Bone argued that Buxton was experiencing significant personal difficulties at the time. He described the act of leaving the images on the screen as a “cry for help” and emphasized that his client was in desperate need of supervision and support. The court was informed that Buxton had sought counseling, but was only offered nine hours of assistance, which was insufficient to address his issues.

Buxton pleaded guilty to six counts of possessing and making indecent images of children, covering the period from January to July 2013. Judge Davies underscored the seriousness of the case, stating, “This is a very serious social evil. This sentence is aimed at rehabilitating you so you are no longer a threat.”

The court’s sentence included a three-year community order with a requirement for Buxton to attend an internet sex offenders treatment program. Additionally, he was issued a sex offences prevention order and ordered to forfeit his computer hard drive and CDs, which contained the illicit material. This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child abuse images, and the importance of rehabilitation alongside punishment for offenders.
