Jan 2002 Net pervert gets three years A pervert who downloaded sordid pictures of little girls on computer is starting a three-year jail sentence. Garry Fane, 37, created a lewd internet file of the girls, who were all of school age. The pictures came to light when police searched Fane’s flat in Baxter Avenue, Southend, while investigating an indecent assault on a nine-year-old girl. Fane was said to have fondled the youngster while she was shopping with her grandmother and a friend at Woolworth’s store in High Street, Southend. The girl, left distraught by the attack, later picked out Fane at an identification parade, said Karen Jones, prosecuting at Basildon Crown Court. She said the defendant, who had mental problems, also beat up a fellow student he met at an information technology college, causing him to suffer a broken jaw and cheekbone. Fane’s barrister, Miss Navaz Daruwalla, said the defendant had gone through a period of offending while he was unwell. He had spent time in psychiatric hospitals. He could not explain why he attacked the fellow student in such a way and claimed it was carried out on the spur of the moment. Miss Daruwalla said Fane also accepts he should not have had the internet pictures of young girls and apologised to the youngster he fondled in Woolworth’s. He pleaded guilty to having lewd pictures, indecently assaulting the girl and causing the student grievous bodily harm.
