JOHN BARNEY FROM ABERDEEN JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND SEXUAL OFFENSES
In a series of disturbing criminal proceedings, John Barney, a man from Aberdeen, has been subjected to multiple prison sentences following his involvement in serious sexual offenses and possession of indecent images of children. The sequence of events unfolded over several months, revealing a pattern of heinous crimes that have shocked the local community and the wider public.
On October 2012, Barney was sentenced to an additional 12 months in prison at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.
This sentence was to run concurrently with his existing 10-year imprisonment for previous convictions related to rape and sexual abuse.
The earlier convictions stemmed from a series of brutal attacks on two young girls, one of whom was a teenage girl, during the years 2004 to 2006.
These assaults occurred at various premises across Aberdeen, where Barney was employed, and involved acts of sexual violence that left lasting scars.
The court heard that Barney, now aged 54, had a long history of sexual misconduct, including the sexual abuse of another girl starting in the 1980s.
This abuse continued over a period of four years, highlighting a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior spanning decades.
Despite his lengthy incarceration, Barney has launched an appeal against the 10-year sentence handed down at the High Court in Inverness last month, seeking to have it reduced or overturned.
Further complicating his criminal profile, Barney pleaded guilty to possessing nine indecent photographs and nine videos depicting children.
These images were uncovered during a police search of his residence, which was conducted as part of an investigation into his other crimes.
The images were classified according to severity, with three photographs at level one, the least severe category, three at level two, and the remaining three at level four, which is considered highly serious.
All nine videos were also classified as level four, indicating their disturbing and explicit nature.
The possession of these images was committed at an address in Aberdeen between February 1, 2010, and March 4, 2011.
During the sentencing hearing, Barney was visibly distressed, weeping throughout the proceedings.
His defense lawyer, Mike Monro, argued that Barney had been 'totally ostracised' by his family and was suffering greatly in prison due to the nature of his crimes.
The lawyer also suggested that, given the relatively small number of images involved, the offense might not have warranted a custodial sentence under different circumstances.
In addition to the prison terms, Sheriff Edward Savage ordered that Barney be placed on the sex offenders register for a period of ten years.
The court also imposed a concurrent sentence, meaning the new sentence would run alongside his existing imprisonment.
The case underscores the severity with which the justice system treats crimes involving child exploitation and sexual violence.
Earlier in September 2012, Barney had already admitted to raping a teenage girl multiple times between 2004 and 2006, as well as engaging in indecent practices with another girl during the 1980s.
The High Court sentenced him to eight years and four months for the rape charges, and an additional 20 months for the indecency offenses, with the sentences to be served consecutively.
These convictions further cement his status as a dangerous offender with a long history of sexual misconduct, spanning several decades and involving multiple victims across Aberdeen and beyond.
