JAMES ROBERTS FROM KIDDERMINSTER JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AT REDHILL SCHOOL IN STOURBRIDGE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, James Roberts, a teacher from Kidderminster, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of downloading and possessing child abuse images on a school computer while working at Redhill School in Stourbridge.Roberts, aged 24 and residing on Goldthorn Road in Kidderminster, was employed as a temporary science teacher at the school when the illicit material was discovered.
The incident came to light in January of this year, leading to his suspension and subsequent police investigation.
According to the magistrates at Halesowen, the investigation revealed that Roberts had accessed a total of 200 images by searching for the term “gay porn” on the school’s computer system.
Of these images, only five depicted children, while the remaining were adult pornography.
The images of children included two of boys aged between five and eight, two of teenagers aged 14, and notably, one image of a newborn baby.
The presence of such material was deemed highly serious and disturbing.
Prosecutor Karen Hackett explained that Roberts’ chances of securing a permanent teaching position were effectively ended when the images were discovered on the school’s computer under his user account.
The school promptly reported the matter to the police, who seized the computer and a memory stick for further examination.
During the police interview at his home on March 3, Roberts admitted to downloading the images.
He claimed that his interest was in the adult male category and insisted he had no sexual interest in children, stating that he was merely curious and copied the images out of curiosity.
Roberts faced five charges of making indecent photographs of children, to which he pleaded guilty.
The magistrates sentenced him to a total of 36 weeks in prison, emphasizing the gravity of his actions given his role as an educator and his previous involvement with children.
The chairman of the bench, Brian Slater, remarked, “We think there is no other appropriate way to deal with you because of the very serious nature of the offences.
These are aggravated by the fact that you were a teacher and had previous involvement working with children.” This case highlights the ongoing concerns about safeguarding in educational environments and the importance of vigilance in preventing such disturbing incidents from occurring in schools.
