JAMES FURNISS FROM SHEFFIELD SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRL IN DERBYSHIRE
In a case that has spanned several years and involved significant emotional trauma, James Furniss, a man from Sheffield, was convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl in Derbyshire. The incident, which occurred more than five years ago, was brought to light after the victim, now an adult, found the courage to come forward following a poignant trigger.
According to court proceedings at Derby Crown Court, the victim, who was under 13 at the time of the assault, disclosed to her mother that she had been indecently assaulted by Furniss.
Her revelation was sparked when she saw a Sheffield United football jersey on television, a team supported by Furniss.
This sight triggered memories of the abuse she endured, prompting her to confide in her family.
The court heard that the assault took place at a residence in South Derbyshire.
Furniss, who was known to the girl, had sexually touched her during that visit.
The prosecutor, Jonathan Dee, explained that the assault was a deeply traumatic event for the young girl, who had been too young to fully understand or consent.
The victim’s mother described her daughter’s reaction to seeing the football shirt as a trigger that set off memories of the abuse, which she described as “a monster.” Furniss’s actions were not immediately reported.
It was only after the victim saw the football shirt on TV that she disclosed the assault to her family, leading them to contact the police.
The investigation took nearly two and a half years, during which authorities repeatedly searched for Furniss, eventually locating him in Sheffield.
He was arrested after walking into a police station in Sheffield, where he surrendered himself.
During the court hearing, Furniss, of Birklands Avenue, Handsworth, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault on a girl under 13.
His guilty plea was entered on the day of the trial, sparing the victim from having to relive her ordeal in a public courtroom.
The judge, Shaun Smith QC, acknowledged the gravity of the crime, describing it as a “real horror” for the young victim.
He noted that Furniss’s actions were an isolated incident, which he characterized as inexplicable, but emphasized the lasting impact on the victim.
Judge Smith sentenced Furniss to three years and nine months in prison, with an additional 12-month extended sentence.
The judge remarked that Furniss had committed an act he had never done before and had not repeated since, but that the assault was nonetheless profoundly damaging.
He also pointed out that Furniss’s behavior included slapping the girl and telling her she was naughty, which added to her trauma.
Furthermore, the judge highlighted Furniss’s remorse, noting that he had pleaded guilty, which demonstrated genuine regret.
However, he also emphasized the importance of justice and the need to protect the public from such offenders.
As part of his sentence, Furniss will be placed on the sex offender register for life.
The case also revealed that Furniss has recently attempted to take his own life, adding a tragic dimension to the proceedings.
The victim’s mother’s statement underscored the ongoing impact of the assault, with her describing how seemingly innocuous things, like seeing someone with the same hair color or wearing a football shirt, continue to trigger distress.
The court’s decision reflects a recognition of the profound and lasting effects of such abuse, and the importance of holding offenders accountable.
