JAMES FREEMAN ABERDEEN SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED FOR REPEATED RAPE OF STEP-DAUGHTER
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Aberdeen, James Freeman, aged 49, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault and rape involving his step-daughter, Rebekah. The disturbing series of crimes spanned several years, beginning when Rebekah was just 10 years old, and continued until she was 15.
Rebekah, now 19, courageously chose to waive her right to anonymity in order to shed light on the abuse she endured at the hands of Freeman.
Her decision to speak out was driven by her desire to seek justice and to prevent others from suffering similar trauma.
Despite her bravery, her path to justice was fraught with difficulties.
She revealed that her mother had initially persuaded her to retract her police statement when she was 15, leading to the dropping of all charges against Freeman at that time.
It was only after Rebekah managed to persuade her mother to listen in on a phone call where Freeman confessed to the years of abuse that she finally unmasked her abuser.
Her persistence paid off when, last month, a jury at the High Court in Aberdeen convicted Freeman of sexual assault and two counts of rape.
The court heard detailed accounts of the abuse, which began at a caravan park in Sutherland, Caithness, when Rebekah was only 10 years old.
Freeman’s predatory behavior continued at various locations across Aberdeen, Banff, Nairn, and even a derelict building in Portsoy, where he repeatedly assaulted her during her early teens.
The court was presented with evidence of Freeman’s heinous acts, including instances where he forcibly restrained Rebekah, tying her arms, blindfolding her, and raping her.
The jury learned that Freeman’s actions were not isolated but part of a prolonged pattern of grooming and abuse, exploiting the trust placed in him as a stepfather.
Judge Simon Collins QC addressed Freeman directly during sentencing, stating, “Your actions showed that you groomed her and your actions also show that you are responsible for a gross and prolonged violation of the position of trust that you had found yourself in.
Clearly, a custodial sentence is the only appropriate disposal available to this court.” Following his release from prison, Freeman will be subject to three years of supervision by authorities, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
Rebekah, speaking out publicly for the first time since her conviction, expressed her pain and relief.
She said, “He ruined my life.
He took my childhood away from me.
Every single person on the jury found him guilty.
When I first told my family I felt no one believed me.
Everyone sided with James, no one was there for me.
I was called a liar and a whore.
But everyone finally knows what he did.”
