ABERDEEN MAN IAN RUSSELL SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENSES INVOLVING 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a recent case heard at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, Ian Russell, a 56-year-old resident of Aberdeen, was formally placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of three years following his conviction related to an inappropriate communication with a minor. The incident involved Russell sending an indecent and obscene text message to a girl who was only 12 years old, an act that caused her significant distress and shock.
According to court records, Russell admitted to the act of sending the inappropriate message, which took place on January 2, 2014.
The message was sent from his residence located on Harris Drive in Aberdeen.
The content of the message was deemed to be sexually explicit and inappropriate for a minor, leading to serious legal consequences.
The young girl, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, was understandably disturbed by the message, which she described as shocking.
The case drew attention to the dangers of online and electronic communication, especially involving minors and adults.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Russell maintained that his intentions were not sexual in nature.
He claimed that the message was a “throwaway remark” and did not intend to cause harm.
During the proceedings, Russell’s defense attorney, Shane Campbell, acknowledged that his client accepted making the comment but emphasized that it was not meant in a sexual context.
Nevertheless, the court found sufficient grounds to impose a sentence that included registration as a sex offender and supervised release.
At yesterday’s hearing, Sheriff Kenneth Stewart sentenced Russell to be registered on the sex offenders’ register for three years.
Additionally, he ordered that Russell be subject to supervision for the same duration, ensuring ongoing monitoring and support to prevent any future offenses.
The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are treated in Aberdeen and highlights the importance of safeguarding minors from exploitation and inappropriate conduct.
