ABERDEEN SEX OFFENDER IAN MCDOUGALL JAILED FOR INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN
In a case that has shocked the community of Aberdeen, Ian McDougall, a 56-year-old sex offender, was sentenced to a total of 16 months in prison after being found guilty of possessing indecent images of children. The court proceedings revealed that McDougall, who was already on the sex offenders’ register due to a prior conviction, was caught with a USB stick containing 86 images depicting minors.
McDougall’s previous conviction dates back to 2011 when he served a 14-month sentence for downloading thousands of indecent images.
His monitoring by police was ongoing, given his status on the sex offenders’ register, which is intended to keep track of individuals deemed a risk to the community.
The recent charges stem from an incident in late January of this year, specifically between the 27th and 31st, when police discovered the illicit material.
McDougall appeared before Aberdeen Sheriff Court to admit to the offence of taking or permitting the taking of indecent images of children.
The court was informed that the images involved young girls aged between 10 and 14 years old.
During the hearing, fiscal depute Anne MacDonald detailed the disturbing nature of the images, emphasizing their young age and the seriousness of the offence.
McDougall’s defence lawyer, Liam McAllister, described his client as a “very bright man and a very foolish man,” attempting to mitigate the severity of the crime.
McAllister also highlighted a breakdown in relations between McDougall and the police officers monitoring him, suggesting that this may have contributed to the incident.
He explained that McDougall believed he could demonstrate a flaw in the police’s monitoring system by showing that individuals could access images on another person’s computer without detection.
In light of the evidence, Sheriff Graeme Napier deferred sentencing until next month to allow for a report to be prepared.
McDougall remains a prisoner at HMP Grampian, and the court’s decision underscores the ongoing concern over the safety of children and the importance of strict enforcement of laws against such offences.
