ABERDEEN MAN SENTENCED FOR SNAPCHAT SEXUAL MESSAGES TO TEEN GIRL
A man who sent sexually explicit messages to a 15-year-old girl, requesting she meet him and asking if they could kiss, has received a formal caution and a sentence that avoids jail.
Greg Robertson admitted messaging the schoolgirl via Snapchat, suggesting they meet in his car and expressing interest in kissing her.
In one message, he even acknowledged that his behavior was "possibly wrong".
The girl, who was just 15 at the time, confided in her mother after Robertson sent her a series of messages, which prompted police involvement.
The messages included images and captions such as “who are you with?” and “if we kiss, will you keep it a secret?” Subsequent searches of Robertson’s home led to his arrest, where he made various admissions.
Robertson pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual communications and images with a child for sexual gratification.
During sentencing at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, he was placed on the sex offender register for a year, ordered to participate in a sex offender's program, and given a community payback order with supervision for 12 months and 140 hours of unpaid work.
A non-harassment order was also issued, preventing him from approaching the victim for one year.
Defense stated that Robertson had been consuming alcohol heavily at the time and had no clear explanation for his actions, which followed the death of a friend.
Sheriff Lesley Johnston noted that there was an element of planning in the offense but acknowledged Robertson’s remorse and apology to the victim.
