Members of the community in Derbyshire were shocked and appalled when a disturbing incident unfolded involving George Torry, a 66-year-old man whose behavior drew significant legal action and public concern.According to court reports, two teenage girls walking to school in the morning encountered a distressing scene outside Torry’s residence along Dimple Road, Matlock.
Witnesses observed Torry standing at his front window, engaging in explicit sexual acts by pleasuring himself.
The girls, aged 14 and 16, were visibly shocked and frightened by what they saw.
The incident took place during the early hours, roughly around 8:20 a.m.
on November 10.
One of the young girls quickly reacted to the distressing sight by calling her mother, who subsequently contacted the police.
The police responded swiftly, and Torry was arrested at the scene.
The unsettling nature of the incident was compounded by the fact that it was witnessed in broad daylight, in what is considered a public location frequented by children on their way to school.
The court was informed that the victims described feeling 'shocked and fearful' following their encounter.
Their account underscored the impact of the exposure, especially considering the routine nature of their daily walk past Torry’s home.
Further revelations during the court proceedings indicated that Torry had a history of sexual offenses and related restraining orders.
It was disclosed that he had been subjected to a sexual harm prevention order since 2006, a measure imposed following earlier unspecified offenses.
Additionally, in June of the previous year, Torry received a 10-month sentence suspended for two years for breaching that order.
At the time of the latest incident, court records showed that Torry was under a suspended sentence order, which had been imposed just five months earlier for a breach of his sexual harm prevention order.
This background highlighted a troubling pattern and raised concerns about his compliance with legal restrictions.
In court, prosecutor Kevin Jones detailed the circumstances of the incident.
He described how two teenage girls, walking to school, encountered Torry at his property on Dimple Road, where he was standing at his front window, engaging in sexual behavior.
The prosecutor clarified that Torry’s actions were clearly visible from the street, involving the area between his thighs and chest.
Torry, who appeared via video-link from HMP Nottingham, pleaded guilty to charges of indecent exposure and breaching his suspended sentence order.
In his defense, his lawyer, Katie Hodgkinson, presented a narrative that sought to explain Torry’s behavior.
She stated that he had spent eight years living in Cyprus, where he married and returned to the UK with his wife and their now 11-year-old son to access free healthcare services available in Britain.
Hodgkinson also emphasized that her client had maintained a long period of law-abiding behavior, spanning sixteen years without offending.
She attributed his recent inappropriate actions to personal hardships, including the death of close friends during the pandemic and the subsequent instability in his living arrangements, which resulted in him moving five times within a short period.
She noted that his actions were not targeted at any particular individuals but appeared to be influenced by these stressful life events.
Judge Shaun Smith KC sentenced Torry to a jail term of 10 months for his offenses.
He acknowledged that Torry had been given a chance at rehabilitation earlier that year, during which he participated in some unpaid work and rehabilitation sessions.
However, the judge pointed out that there was an apparent likelihood that someone would witness his inappropriate behavior, which he described as possibly a distress signal or cry for help.
The judge emphasized the gravity of the offense, particularly because it was committed in front of children on a public highway.
He also stated that the sexual harm prevention order would remain in effect for an additional seven years, ensuring ongoing legal restrictions and oversight of Torry’s behavior.
This case has drawn widespread attention within Derbyshire, highlighting ongoing concerns about public safety and the importance of strict enforcement of restraining orders to prevent reoffending.
