DERRY LOW ABERDEEN DOMESTIC ABUSER SENTENCED TO JAIL FOR BRUTAL FOUR-YEAR VIOLENCE SPREE
A man from Aberdeen, Derry Low, has been handed a prison sentence after a lengthy and violent history of domestic abuse against his former partner. The 23-year-old appeared before Aberdeen Sheriff Court, where he admitted to a sustained pattern of aggressive and harmful behavior spanning over four years.
The court heard that Low, who has already been convicted twice for domestic violence offenses, repeatedly subjected his partner to physical assaults and strangulation, with one particularly severe incident leaving her with a torn eye.
According to court reports, Low’s abusive conduct was both relentless and severe.
During one incident, he gripped the woman’s neck with such force that she heard her eye “pop,” an act that left her drenched in sweat and visibly distressed.
The court was told that Low’s tumultuous relationship with his partner was characterized by frequent episodes of violence and intimidation.
The relationship was described as on-and-off over several years, with Low’s anger often boiling over into physical attacks.
In July 2020, Low’s rage culminated in him approaching his partner and violently shaking her by the arms.
The situation escalated further in March 2022 when the woman, fearing another attack, recorded Low on her phone.
His reaction was to kick the phone out of her hand and push her, causing her to suffer wrist pain.
A few months later, during another heated argument, Low forcefully kicked open a bedroom door and repeatedly kicked her legs, resulting in visible bruising.
Despite her pleas and tears, he seized her arms again, inflicting additional bruises.
The most serious incident occurred in December 2022, when Low sat on her chest, grabbed her by the neck with both hands, and strangled her.
During this attack, she struggled to breathe and heard her eye “pop,” a traumatic injury that underscored the brutality of his actions.
The woman begged him to stop, and after a moment, Low apologized, hugged her, and left the scene.
Following their separation, Low continued to threaten her through voicemails and messages, including threats to kill her and statements like “going to kill her” and “break your f****** face.” He also insulted her for involving the police in the matter.
Low pleaded guilty to engaging in a course of abusive behavior from November 2019 through February 2024.
His defense lawyer, Jenny Logan, acknowledged her client’s remorse and explained that his violent conduct was worsened by alcohol and drug use.
She also noted that Low was making efforts to change his life.
However, Sheriff Lesley Johnston emphasized the severity of the four-year abuse period, highlighting that Low had caused physical injuries, put his victim’s life at risk, and inflicted significant psychological trauma.
Given his prior convictions, the sheriff concluded that only a custodial sentence would be appropriate.
Consequently, Low was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Additionally, a five-year non-harassment order was imposed, prohibiting him from contacting his former partner and preventing further abuse or intimidation.
