DEREK BAILLIE'S SHOCKING ABERDEEN CRIMES: SERIAL SEX OFFENDER EXPOSES HIMSELF IN UNION TERRACE GARDENS
In May 2016, a disturbing incident unfolded in Aberdeen involving Derek Baillie, a known serial sex offender, who publicly exposed himself in a popular city park, Union Terrace Gardens.Baillie, who had been registered as a sex offender since 2014, was previously convicted of groping an unconscious woman in the same location.
His latest act of indecency occurred amidst a busy summer day, with families enjoying the outdoor amenities of the Victorian-style park.
According to court reports, the incident took place around lunchtime on July 7 of the previous year, when the gardens were bustling with visitors.
A family sitting on a picnic bench near the HMT (His Majesty’s Theatre) noticed Baillie sitting on the grass with a jacket draped over his crotch, which immediately drew suspicion.
The father of the family observed that his young son was playing nearby and, upon hearing a cry, approached to investigate.
It was then that the father saw Baillie with his trousers undone and his private parts exposed.
The family quickly alerted the police, who responded promptly to the scene.
When officers arrived, they found Baillie sitting with his trousers still undone, and other witnesses had also seen his inappropriate behavior.
The police confirmed that Baillie was engaging in acts of public indecency in a public space that was filled with families and children enjoying the summer weather.
Baillie, aged 63 at the time, was taken into custody and brought before Aberdeen Sheriff Court.
The court heard details of his previous convictions, which included two separate sexual assaults on women in the city.
In October 2014, Baillie was involved in an incident where he encountered a heavily intoxicated woman.
His solicitor at the time, David Sutherland, explained that Baillie initially attempted to assist the woman, but she fell unconscious on the ground.
Sutherland described Baillie as being “overcome by temptation” during the incident, which involved him placing his hands under the woman’s clothing and pulling up her skirt to expose her underwear.
Additionally, Baillie admitted to sexually assaulting a disabled woman in an Aberdeen shop on June 28 of the same year.
The assault occurred at the Spar Esso Service Station on North Anderson Drive, where he touched the woman on her bottom as she was leaving the store.
During the court proceedings, Sheriff William Summers ordered that Baillie be placed back on the sex offenders’ register.
The sheriff also deferred sentencing to allow for further background reports to be prepared.
Baillie, who resides at flat 3, 723 Great Northern Road, faces ongoing legal restrictions and monitoring as a result of his repeated offenses, which continue to cause concern within the Aberdeen community.
