DAVID WOOD OF SOUTHEND SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES
In June 2011, David Wood, a 44-year-old from Penhurst Avenue, Southend, was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of multiple child sex offences. He was visibly distressed and cried as he received his sentence at Southend Crown Court. Wood had pleaded guilty to charges including raping a child, four counts of indecent assault of a child, and two counts of indecency with a child.The abuse took place in the 1990s, but the victim only came forward after unexpectedly encountering Wood in Southend in December 2010. Prosecutor Carolyn Gardiner explained, “She never told anybody until she happened to bump into the defendant in December 2010, in High Street, Southend. She approached him and asked if he remembered her. He didn’t. It was after that she felt she had to finally get the matter off her chest and inform the police about what happened.”
The court heard that the abuse began when the girl was just eight years old, with Wood allegedly warning her not to tell her mother. The victim estimates she was raped at least ten times, though Wood claimed he only raped her “two or three times.”
In his mitigation, solicitor Lee Wilcockson stated, “He is remorseful, your honour. He says to me every day since then he has thought of the aggrieved and of what he did to her, and understands the impact of what he’s done.”
Judge Christopher Mitchell acknowledged the defendant’s troubled background, describing him as a “damaged young man” with a difficult upbringing. His father had been in and out of prison, and Wood had lived with relatives in Scotland after his father’s absences. Tragically, his uncle died and his aunt was murdered during his childhood, and he was moved through various care homes.
Despite these circumstances, Judge Mitchell emphasized, “I have to sentence you on the basis of the fact you repeatedly raped a very young girl. The sentence I pass upon you is intended to reflect your overall behaviour.”
As part of his sentence, Wood was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for the remainder of his life.
