July 2010 Guitar teacher jailed for child sex offences A GUITAR teacher will serve at least four years in prison after admitting child sex offences. Derek White, 58, of Colemans Avenue, Southend, pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of engaging in sexual activity with a child, one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, one count of attempted rape and also admitted making in excess of 3,000 indecent images of children. He was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court today to eight and a half years in custody, with half to be served on licence. He was also given an extended licence term of five years, put on the Sex Offenders Register for life and also made subject of a Sexual Offence Prevention Order (SOPO). White’s victim was a teenage boy and the offences took place over a period of two years between 2007 and 2009. Dc Dan Jordan, of Rayleigh Child Abuse Investigation Unit, said: “Derek White was in a position of trust. He was entrusted by the boy’s parents to assist in enhancing his musical ability. White abused that trust and his victim. “This case shows that Essex Police will help all vulnerable victims to ensure that their abusers are brought before the courts and punished for committing such deplorable acts.”
