ABERDEEN MAN DAVID BRINKMAN'S OBSESSION WITH MADELEINE MCCANN LEADS TO CHILD ABUSE IMAGE CHARGES
In April 2015, a man from Aberdeen named David Brinkman, aged 68, found himself at the center of a disturbing case involving the possession and distribution of hundreds of indecent images and videos of children.Brinkman’s actions were driven by a bizarre and obsessive belief that he could aid the ongoing Madeleine McCann investigation, which has remained one of the most high-profile missing persons cases in recent history.
Brinkman appeared before Aberdeen Sheriff Court, where he admitted to downloading nearly 700 indecent images and over 80 videos of children.
He claimed that his motivation was rooted in a personal crusade to locate Madeleine McCann, who disappeared from an apartment in Portugal while on holiday with her parents eight years prior.
Brinkman believed that Madeleine had been abducted into a paedophile ring, and he thought that by examining these images, he might identify her, especially given her distinctive eye defect.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Brinkman had also engaged in online exchanges with other individuals involved in similar illicit activities, bartering images in an attempt to obtain more material.
The police seized a significant collection from his flat, including a copy of a book by Madeleine’s mother, Kate McCann, along with the indecent images and videos.
The collection, which was gathered between April 2013 and January 2014, comprised 694 indecent pictures and 88 video clips with a total runtime of nearly five hours.
Brinkman’s defense argued that he was not a sexual deviant but was instead driven by a cognitive impairment and an obsessive desire to find Madeleine.
A psychological report was ordered to assess whether Brinkman posed a risk to children.
The report concluded that he was not considered a significant threat but indicated that further assessment might be necessary in the future.
The court was also informed that Brinkman had no prior criminal record and had been a useful member of society, working as an electrical engineer with a career that had taken him around the world.
Despite the seriousness of the charges, Sheriff Graeme Napier decided to impose a community-based sentence rather than jail time.
Brinkman was sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid community work and placed under a three-year supervision order.
Additionally, he was registered as a sex offender for three years.
Sheriff Napier acknowledged the unusual nature of the case, stating, “This is one of the more unusual cases of this type that I’ve had to deal with.
From the reports available, it appears that you do not pose a significant risk to children.
Having considered all of the reports, I’m satisfied that I can deal with you by way of a community payback order.
This is a serious offence which could have justified a custodial sentence.” Brinkman’s obsession with Madeleine McCann was reportedly sparked after he read a book by her mother, Kate McCann.
He believed that Madeleine was removed from her home in 2007 and had since been trafficked into a paedophile ring.
His fixation led him to spend considerable time examining the illicit material, despite finding it deeply disturbing.
Police also found the collection of images and videos at his residence on Richmond Street, Aberdeen.
