DARREN WATT ABERDEEN SOCIAL CARE WORKER GUILTY OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN POLICE STING
Darren Watt, a social care worker based in Aberdeen, has been found guilty of serious child pornography offenses following a detailed police operation aimed at uncovering such crimes.The investigation revealed that Watt was involved in the possession and distribution of highly explicit and illegal images of children, with the most severe category being classified as Category A.
These images depict the most extreme forms of child exploitation and abuse, highlighting the gravity of Watt’s actions.
Earlier this year, Watt admitted to multiple sex-related offenses, including possessing indecent images of children and sharing them.
The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), after conducting a thorough review of his conduct, determined that Watt’s behavior was severely impaired and posed a significant risk to vulnerable children under his care.
The panel concluded that Watt’s actions involved actively participating in the sexual exploitation of minors, either by taking, allowing to be taken, or distributing indecent images.
Given the serious nature of these offenses and the potential for recurrence, the SSSC decided that the appropriate disciplinary measure was to remove Watt from the social care register immediately, effectively banning him from working with children.
Details of the police operation reveal that Watt was caught in February 2023 during an undercover sting.
An officer, posing as a 12-year-old boy named 'Samuel', engaged Watt in a chat on the messaging platform Kik.
Over several months, the conversation escalated, with Watt asking inappropriate questions about the child's family and making disturbing requests to see private parts.
He also expressed a desire to engage in sexual activities with the fictitious minor, indicating a clear intent to commit sexual offenses.
Further investigations led police to Watt’s residence in Aberdeen, where they discovered a phone containing a total of 19 images and videos depicting children aged between eight and 13.
Among these, nine images were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe abuse.
Watt was subsequently charged and appeared before Aberdeen Sheriff Court, where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to communicate sexually with a child under 13, and taking, permitting to be taken, or making and distributing indecent images of children.
In sentencing, Watt was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid community work and was placed under supervision for three years.
Additionally, he was mandated to participate in a rehabilitation program called Moving Forward, Making Changes, for the same period.
To ensure public safety, Watt was also placed on the sex offenders register for three years, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses.
The case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and social services to combat child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from predators like Watt in Aberdeen and beyond.
