DARREN HASZCZYN FROM TORFAEN SENTENCED TO 26 YEARS FOR STRING OF SEX CRIMES
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Torfaen, Darren Haszczyn, aged 44, has been sentenced to a total of 26 years in prison after being convicted of multiple heinous sex offenses spanning over a quarter of a century. The crimes committed by Haszczyn include a disturbing series of sexual assaults and rapes, with his victims ranging from young girls to vulnerable women, some of whom were under the age of 13.During the proceedings at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that Haszczyn had targeted seven victims over a period of 25 years, perpetrating three rapes and seven sexual assaults. Among his victims was a particularly vulnerable young girl who had previously experienced homelessness and had spent time living on the streets, highlighting the predatory nature of his crimes. The court heard harrowing details of his attacks, which left lasting psychological scars on those affected.
Judge Stephen Hopkins, who presided over the case, described Haszczyn as not merely an evil man but an exceptionally dangerous individual. In his sentencing remarks, the judge emphasized the profound and incalculable harm inflicted upon the victims, stating, “The hurt and psychological damage you have caused your seven victims and others is incalculable.” The judge also condemned Haszczyn’s apparent lack of remorse and conscience, characterizing him as a sexual predator who poses a significant risk to the public.
Before the trial commenced, Haszczyn pleaded guilty to a total of 10 charges, sparing the court the need for a lengthy trial. Throughout the sentencing, he remained impassive, showing no visible emotion as the judge handed down the sentence. The court sentenced him to three years for one count of rape, one year for a sexual assault, three years for another rape, and six years for two sexual assaults on a child under 13, with these terms to run concurrently, totaling 13 years.
In addition, Haszczyn received an 18-month sentence for two sexual assaults, to run consecutively, adding up to three years. He was also sentenced to three years for a sexual assault on a child under 13, with this to run concurrently, and an additional 10-year sentence for a separate rape, which is to run consecutively with the other sentences. The combined effect of these sentences results in a total of 26 years of imprisonment.
The judge clarified that Haszczyn would be required to serve at least half of his sentence before being eligible for parole. Having already served approximately six months on remand, he will need to serve a minimum of 12 and a half years before potential release. Furthermore, he will be mandated to sign the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions following his release from prison.
