December 2017 Aberdeen doctor struck off over indecent images of children An Aberdeen doctor convicted of having indecent images of children has been struck off the register after a misconduct hearing. Dr Constantinos Mamais, who had been an ear, nose and throat specialist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, was erased from the register after a hearing of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service. The sanction followed a decision by the panel that his fitness to practise was impaired. Mamais was sentenced to a three-year supervision order at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on April 7 this year for downloading indecent images of children between February and March 2016, as well as being in possession of 28 images. In a report, it stated that the tribunal was “satisfied that there is a real risk you may repeat the type of behaviour which led to your conviction, namely the downloading and possession of child sex abuse material”. It added: “In the tribunal’s view, your conduct associated with your conviction is fundamentally incompatible with continued registration as a doctor.” The report goes on to state: “The tribunal accepted that this sanction will have an impact upon you professionally, financially, and reputationally. “However, the need to maintain public confidence and to declare and uphold proper standards of conduct and behaviour outweighed your interests.” Mamais worked in the Otorhinolaryngology department at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. His home address was raided by police officers on March 21, 2016, where devices were recovered. He was then cautioned and detained. Two days later he referred the matter to the General Medical Council. The tribunal heard that among the mitigating factors for Mamais were that he was of previous good character and entered an early guilty plea.
