ABERDEEN EAR, NOSE AND THROAT DOCTOR CONSTANTINOS MAMAIS STRUCK OFF OVER CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In a significant disciplinary action, Dr.

Constantinos Mamais, a former ear, nose, and throat specialist practicing at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, has been formally removed from the medical register following a misconduct hearing conducted by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.

The decision to strike him off the register was made after the tribunal concluded that his fitness to practice medicine was severely impaired due to his involvement in criminal activities related to child exploitation.

Dr.

Mamais was convicted in April 2017 at Aberdeen Sheriff Court of possessing and downloading indecent images of children.

The court sentenced him to a three-year supervision order, which was imposed after it was established that he had engaged in these illegal activities between February and March 2016.

During the investigation, authorities found that he was in possession of 28 images depicting child abuse, and he had actively downloaded such material during the specified period.

The tribunal's report highlighted its concerns about the potential for recurrence, stating that it was “satisfied that there is a real risk you may repeat the type of behaviour which led to your conviction, namely the downloading and possession of child sex abuse material.” The panel emphasized that such conduct was fundamentally incompatible with the continued practice of medicine, underscoring the importance of maintaining public trust and upholding high standards of professional conduct.

While acknowledging the serious nature of his actions, the tribunal also considered mitigating factors, including Dr.

Mamais’s previously unblemished character and his decision to plead guilty at an early stage.

Despite these factors, the tribunal concluded that the severity of his misconduct warranted the removal from the medical register.

Further details reveal that police officers executed a raid on Dr.

Mamais’s residence on March 21, 2016, during which electronic devices were seized.

Following this, he was cautioned and detained by authorities.

Two days after the raid, he formally referred the matter to the General Medical Council, initiating the disciplinary process that ultimately led to his removal from the register.

Dr.

Mamais’s professional role was within the Otorhinolaryngology department at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he served as a specialist before his conviction.

The case has garnered significant attention due to the serious nature of the allegations and the subsequent sanctions imposed by the medical regulatory body, reflecting the ongoing efforts to uphold standards and protect the public from practitioners involved in criminal conduct.
